I was making the trek from Calgary to Vancouver on the 23rd. The trip through the Coquihalla was snowy and miserable. Traffic was moving at about 90 km/h, which is about 55 miles. I was dog tired from driving for eight hours straight through the first pass, so I had my wife drive. The poor woman is used to snow and ice, but being a Calgary girl, she is not experienced in the mountains. We hit an icy patch and the back end kicked out. I thought she had it recovered right away, but she made a small over correction, and the back end kicked out a little further the other way. Before we knew it, we were sliding sideways down a solid ice. We hit the left side curb, which was a foot high snow bank, then send across the road and hit the right bank sideways and got air. Good thing the snow was soft, and not frozen solid. I crawled out the window, and checked out the car. The back tires were sitting about three feet off of the ground, with the nose and passenger side somewhat buried. I was very shocked when a semi truck pulled up, pulled out a chain, and yanked me out of the bank.

All in all, the damage is minor, but looks like it will be costly to fix. My front bumper is not happy, and either is the passenger side, where the passenger door is pushed in, and scratched up. The steering/handling seems funny, and it is no longer smooth. I doubt I will be able to get it fixed before I get back home.

All in all, the damage is minor. This is one tough car. It didn't even hiccup when I put it in gear and drove the rest of the way to Maple Ridge. I am going to go out an take pics, and then post them.

I can't help but thinking that we are very very lucky. No one was hurt, we all walked away without a scratch. If we went over the other side of the road that we first hit, we would have possibly landed on our lid, as the ditch was about twenty feet deep.

Yea, I'm totally bummed, but so happy that we are all ok. It wasn't just me and my wife, our two kids were in the back seat. My eight year old was screaming her head off, but she was just terrified. She keeps waking up at night crying now.

I'm still up for the meet on the 27th if the rest of you are. I don't know when I'll be down here again.

Pop the front bumper cover out asap, with a little heat, would be my advice to you. Glad everyone is still good!

That sucks but glad you're all ok. The Coquihalla eats cooling systems and transmissions in summer - just look for all the scorched rectangles on the roadside. In winter it's even worse - it can be deceptively slick and often there are too many people going too fast for the conditions.

I'm still up for a meet on the 27th if we can do it fairly early in the day as we've probably got family coming later in the day.

It will likely be raining so maybe no photo ops but it would still be nice to meet some fellow CVN'ers and we promise not to look too close at your car!

Yeah honestly, is situations like that, you could very easily flip over and then you have opened a whole new bag of worms.

The car is fixable, and luckily junkyards everywhere have parts for your car.

^^ This. I popped my front bumper cover out after someone backed into me. You can't really tell unless you get close.

And no matter what the most important part is you and your wife are ok.
