A/C clutch and turn signals both stopped working - 07/05/10 09:12 PM
Was waiting at a stop light with the A/C on and noticed the air started to feel warmer, like the A/C had quit working. Also noticed at the same time that both turn signals are not working. Got to where I was going and inspected the A/C clutch for operation - not engaging.
It's a 2000 P71. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Yep. It happened to me. The clutch goes and if you keep using the A/C the circut breaker that controls the automatic temperature and the turn signals blows. Replace the fuse and don't use the A/C until you get he A/C clutch replaced.

Replaced the fuse (#5 in the interior fuse panel) which supplies power to the A/C clutch, turn signals, and a few other things. Ran the A/C for about 20 minutes, checked turn signals, everything seems to be working fine. I will keep an eye and ear on the A/C clutch and if this happens again I'll be more suspect of a faulty clutch.
Thanks for the help GlockElbow.

Anytime, glad to help. Keep an eye on the clutch. It took months for mine to finally fail. I noticed no A/C intermittantly and then it worked fine for a long time. Of course it failed on a long trip.

About a week ago I replaced the fuse with a circuit breaker to prevent turn signal failure while on the road if the A/C happened to die. Noticed the breaker tripped a few times when I would decelerate but while cruising down the highway the A/C worked fine. Now it's not working at all - trips the breaker immediately and repeatedly. With the clutch unplugged the circuit does not fail. Plug in the clutch and it fails immediately.
I replaced the clutch/compressor with one I had installed on my '94 shortly before I wrecked it and the same problem persists.
I checked ohms resistance on both of my compressor clutches and they're both at 3.6 ohms. I checked ohms resistance on a '99 Vic's working compressor clutch and it was 4.0 ohms. Doesn't seem like much difference that would warrant the circuit problem I have... Is there a different way to test the clutch?
Is there another part of this circuit that could be causing the problem? I checked the relay - it's fine. It is manual climate control.
Thanks guys.

Check for a short in the wiring.

Did a lot more diagnostics yesterday and today, going old school with a test light. Testing confirmed a shorted A/C clutch feed wire, "somewhere". After looking around a while I saw a couple of wires from the large loom near the multi-connector laying on the brake lines below the master cylinder, and they were shorted out big time. Fixed those wires and everything is working great!
Just thought I'd update with what I found, in case anybody else runs into the same issue.
Thanks everybody for the help.

Hi folks. I'm new here but have already found the posts helpful. I don't do my own work on the car but like to be as informed as possible.
I have a 2001 Crown Vic P71.
I'm having issues with the a/c and turn signals. The compressor clutch went out while I was on a road trip and the turn signals went out too. Got a clutch at junkyard, had it installed, a/c worked for about an hour, then went out again on the road trip back.
What concerns me is that even without the a/c on, the turn signals are still going out. The fuse is blown almost every time I get in the car. If the a/c is causing the fuse to blow, why would it blow without the a/c on?
I bought a new clutch but after some research, think I might need whole new compressor because the car got really hot and I've read that the heat can ruin the compressor.
Thanks for any information/experience/advice you can offer.

I know this is an old post but I am dealing with the same problem as sajeffe. The turn signals will go out if I try and use them with or without the AC on. If I have the AC on, no problem. But once I try using my turn signals, mainly the right turn signal, pop goes the fuse with or without the AC on.

Once the turn signal pops the fuse, the AC won't work as well but his may because the two accessories share the same fuse?
