I'm getting a rear end "clunk" when accelerating hard from a dead stop. Now this is NOT the universal joints on the driveshaft. I know that sound. This is more like the rear spring(drivers side) is loading up and hitting a bump stop or something. I will be going underneath her this evening, but wanted to get some ideas of what it could be. Thanks, V.

don't forget about the rear spring insulatores. When I fist got my 97 PI it was making the clunking noise and gfor the life of me I could never figures it out. When I replaced the rear springs I noticed that the insulator was not seated properly and it was torn and deteriated and springs was rubbing against the metal. A new set of insulator and springs and it went away.

My clunk was teeth of my spider gear getting picked back up in the gear lube.

Is your Emergency Brake fully operational?

If not, that maybe the problem. Just go with me on that...happened to my Chevy Camaro.

If your 150% sure its not the U joints, I would guess the rear differential. I would check your springs/shocks, and if neither of these are the cause, I would second guess your U joints.

I know its not the U-joints. It will shift into Drive/Reverse with no clunking. It will already be in drive, with the rear end 'loaded up', I'll hit the gas and then hear the noise. It isn't really a clunk, but a thud.

I'd get under there and look real hard at all 4 rear control arms as well as the transmission mount. Does it make the noise when you hit bumps and turn sharp? Possibly swaybar endlink mounting plates...

Something rolling around in the trunk?

(Don't laugh...I've had 'mysterious clunking noises' that sounded really worrisome that turned out to be some piece of loose cargo.)
