Pressed the button, the gas door opened. Then I heard the sound of metal hitting the concrete pad at the Shell station where I buy my fuel.

I fueled up, paid for it, and on the way back to the car I see a chrome button with broken clips, a "A" shaped piece of steel, and a spring on the ground. Stunned, I picked up the pieces and went to Subway for dinner.

The button came off and looks like it is broken. My original 1995 vintage switch is broken!!!!!

Does anyone know if it is a PITA to remove the old switch to install a new one? I know I have to take the door panel off, not a big deal. Just curious how hard it is to snap that plastic housing out of the door panel.

Also, I probably won't be able to get a new one in "chrome" because they haven't made them since God knows how long ago!!!

Anyone have any insight on the subject?

Have to take off the door panel IIRC. Other than that, the job is easy. Did mine last year

Yeah, just go to a u-pull it yard, and find a GM/CV with the driver's side door insides still intact. Pop out the panel, and push the assembly out. There ya go. You can then pull the button, spring, etc out and carefully reinstall it in your car. Took about 5 minutes to do with mine.

IIRC the dealer only wanted 8 bucks for the part. I don't know if its obsolete now or not, as I bought mine a while back.

If it pops out as easy as the traction control switch does from the glove box of my 2000, it should be a piece of cake.

Going to get a new one. Probably in black like the new 2003's - chrome is out.

My grandmother's '93 CV LX needed a new key ignition switch....old one was chrome, new one is black plastic!

If you can access the wiring through the hole where the switch was you don't have to go through the aggravation of removing the door panel. Just get a trunk release button or other momentary contact switch that you can connect and push into place from the outside. The trunk release button on my 98 has plastic fins that compress as it is pushed through and then expand so it stays in place.

Keep in mind that I don't want to leave pry marks on the panel while removing the switch.

The switch retails for $7.80 - my dealer has one in stock, I will pick it up Monday.

I would assume I would need to crush the fins to get the switch out, which is why I am expecting to pull the panel off the door. Plus, I have two new 5X7 door stereo speakers going in with a FM moduated Sony 10 disc CD/MP3 player the week after next.

In a nut shell, it doesn't matter to me if I take the door panel off - I have to do it anyways.

Door panel removal is pretty easy IMHO. You just have to know how to it, the people who owned my car beforehand screwed up the door panel bad. They just tried to pull, instead of lifting it off those nifty hooks.

The '95 d/s door panel has never been off....it has a few cracks, but I think I'll be all set. Looks like a nice project for next week.

I am just curious if I am going to get a chrome switch or a black switch!

I was playing with the fuel release door switch assembly this afternoon.....it came out very easily with a small screwdriver.

I'd like to pop out the trunk release in the 2000 and replace it with a lockable on from the earlier models.

(Still have to take door apart for speakers anyways!)

That's lousy Joe. '95 may have been the last year for them in chrome... I didn't get even a black one on my 1996. (I did get a chrome trunk release button with a key lock on the '96 though). I'll bet Ford still has some chrome ones kicking around in a parts bin somewhere.

It was an option on the '96 GM, but mine doesn't have it...it does have the locking chrome trunk release tho.

When I get out of work today I am going to get the new switch. I'll post the results (chrome or black), part number, and price here when I get it.

Fuel door release an OPTION on a 96 GM? Odd.

Well, I went to Rodman Ford and picked up my new fuel door switch. A bargain at $4.03 net. It was even CHROME like the old one! Maybe it was New Old Stock, at least this one oughta last me.

Part number: F2AZ*9B242*A - List Price: $7.16

I might even pick another up to dress up the door panel in my 2000!

That's good news Joe- it'll "match" the car properly. I was noticing that my 2002 has the "cheap-o" looking black plastic door-lock buttons as opposed to the chrome ones on the '96. Do you suppose Ford really saved a significant amount of money by doing that?
