Happened to me on my '89 not very long ago.
Got a new one from the dealer. Was about $30.
Like I was told in this earlier thread, you will use your old lock cylinder with it. It wasn't difficult.
First, I tried to repair the little "scissors" pot metal pieces with JBWeld. Naaaah. Didn't work.

Good advice in the thread is to hold the latch open while you close the door -- I do that now, even though I don't think I'll have to make it last another 17 years.

Thanks for the info, I'm still unsure about how to open the glovebox to get the broken lock out. Somehow its difficult to replace when it can't be opened.

Thanks

I worked on mine with a screwdriver for a while when it froze up. Glove box is just a little misaligned now...

The one in my white car is at the point where I REALLY need to fix it. But, I'll wait until it's completely gone.

Happened on my '89 also. I undid the hinge screws and was able to work a screwdriver in to undo latch. Went to the local u-pull it and they just gave it to me.

Got it out finally. Thanks for the advice, I slowly dismantled it from the outside until I could get a screwdriver inside to manually actuate the latch. Now I'm off to buy a new one.

Thanks

After 231k miles, my 89 is on its 3rd glovebox latch. I now have learned to lube it occasionlly with some grease. This has kept this one working the longest. This is a weak part in these great cars.

$38? That's a bit much. I hope you didn't pay it. I might have an extra one with no key. It's yours for shipping.

I'm sure you could get several for that price from a boneyard. When one breaks, just grab another one from your box of parts!
