So I was driving down the road this weekend, shortly after going over a speed bump I hear a beeping sound. It's coming from behind the dash, does not sound like the beep when I leave the lights on. It was about half a second long with about a couple seconds in between each beep. No warning lights illuminated and the car just recently passed local emissions tests (where if it throws any codes it fails). Engine sounded fine, nothing out of the ordinary.

Any ideas what this could be?

I've had the car for just over a week. It's a 2002 P71 with 97k miles on it.

Does it have Traction Control? Are you sure all your dash lights work correctly. What about ABS? Only other thing I can think of would be something maybe in the LCM.

Dont think I've got trac controll. How would one go about checking?

All the dash lights come on when the car is started (ABS, Air Bag, etc...)

if you have traction control when you first turn your key there should be a orange light on the top left of you cluster that IIRC says Trac Contr or something similar.

Or just punch it and see if you can break loose. If you can do a brake stand then you don't have T/C. If you do when you try the car will not like it and pull power from the motor and apply brakes to the rear wheels. Then the little light on the top left of the cluster will flash. I am just brain storming here to determine what may cause your sound.

Then you don't have it. (unless the light is burned out but not likely as it is not used very often).

I would guess that your LCM may be freaking out somehow. Have you tried to isolate exactly where it is comming from? The LCM should be located behind the dash in the center and to the right of the steering column. should be a little metal box under there. Not the PCM that is located above the steering column behind the dash.

My car made the same noise. If your air bag light is burnt out then you will hear the beep about five or so times.
I pulled the instrument cluster out and found the bulb was bad. I originally pulled out the cluster to replace the oil pressure gauge bulb and ended up replacing all of the bulbs.... 16 total #194's

Yep, I always wear my seat belt and I hear that as a possibility and the Air bag light is functioning. It was right after I went over a speed bump so it could have just unseated the bulb for a moment and caused it.

If it happens again I'll see if it's the LCM, When I bought the car the fuse for the turn signals was blown and it blew after replacing it twice, replaced it with one that was 5 amps more and it has not blown again.

This is one of the joys of owning a former police car. You have no idea what that dept had wired into it. At work we have buzzers wired in to some of the rigs that if your door opens and the truck is not in park you get a hell of a noise. Your thinking who would open the door and have the truck in park, well trust me it happens. However the popular thing became to find the piezo buzzer they wire in and connect the hot wire to a diffrent source. One popluar one was to hook the power wire to the power on wire for an amplifier on the back of our CD players. Everytime you turn on your stereo you would get a schreech. Sounds like we have too much time on our hands? Try working for 6 weeks straight 12-16 hours a day 1,400 miles from your family in the oilfield. Pranks happen.

Remove Radio, Remove (unclip) strip the goes across the middle of the dash between the steering wheel and the drivers door then the piece that goes from the pass door over around where your trunk release should be (or should have been if moved) the over to the steering wheel. Now remove the IIRC 10mm bolts (may be smaller) that hold the black bezel around the cluster, radio, and air vents and remove. (you may need to pull the car out of part to be able to get it out from behine the steering wheel. Now you will see your cluster. IIRC there are 4 10mm? or smaller bolts that hold the cluster in. remove then and the clust will come out. Turn the cluster around and you should be able to see the little fobs that you turn and remove to get to the bulbs. I am pretty sure there is probably a write up that someone could link you to.

Yup, like 98vicp71 said.

Pull the wood trim pieces on both sides of the dash off by pulling them towards you.
Disconenct the rear defrost switch and the clock or trunk release switch as you pull the pieces off. It is easiest to work from one side to anohter. Having the front doors open makes it easier, but is not needed.

Pull the radio out using 4 small finish nails, or more preferebly, the $3 DIN removal tools.

Remove all the bolts securing the piece that surrounds the cluster and radio. Do not forget there are two bolts mounted on the under side of the instrument cluster 'hood'. You do not need to unbolt the ones on the passensger side for the trim/airbag.

Tilt the steering column all the way down.

Gently work the dash panel out, I liek to keep a rag on top of the column to prevent scratching. You need to disconnect the headlight switch and panel dim switch as you do this.

The cluster is bolted in on the sides of the cluster shell, 2 hex heads on each side - then you can disconnect the harnesses as you pull it out. You DO NOT need to remoev those small torx head bronze colored bolts unless you want to clean inside the cluster face.

TO change the two HVAC bulbs, simply unbolt the 4 hex head screws on the sides of the HVAC panel (after that trim piece mentioned before is off), tilt it out and down some, untwist the black bulb holders, put new bulbs in, twist the bulb holders back in. You don't need to disconenct the HVAC to do so.

The cluster AND the HVAC panel use 194 bulbs, get 194LL so they last longer.

Install reverse of removal, best of luck, PM me if you need any more help

My 03 Sport just did the exact same thing. It was the radio. It would not register the time and would not turn on. It did this out of the clear blue after I cranked at the gas station!!

I disconnected the negative battery terminal for 5 or so seconds...the beep went away and everything was OK again. Something apparently had hung cross-ways in the radio and needed to be reset.

But I suspect that you have a different radio than mine..

Interesting. Oddly enough I had a similar thing happen to my radio the other night. Started the car up and the radio wouldn't turn on. Could very well be the radio that caused it....

Still has yet to happen again. Not going to worry about it for now. Thanks for all the Tips gents!
