Run away as fast as you can from that Autozone and run to Pep Boys and buy a Bosch. Have them bench test the alternator before you buy it. Or get the good stuff at NAPA.

Rebuild yours with motorcraft parts and you will be better off.

I bought a Duralast Gold alternator for my old Lumina. Lasted at least 60,000 miles with no problems.

From what I gather any Ford alternator 3g+ used in the 4.6 is a real crapshoot for getting rebuilt. My brothers Mistique has had at least 2 and keeps overcharging the battery BIG time.

Dunno why this is, I never had to replace a rebuilt GM alternator in 25 years??

panther alternators seem to last a long time.

i'd rebuild or just go to a junkyard and find a low mileage one.

The reason for this is the crappy china rebuild parts are not made to spec. I have seen no factory units overcharge.

I currently have a duralast gold, which is not remanufactured, its new. When this one goes I will go with a motorcraft or upgrade to a larger one...My advice is to not go to autozone for anything other than car care products and oil, almost all the parts they have are junk.

I would never get one of the dicount rebuild peices of junk. If your alternator lasted to 100k or more, just buy another oem one and never buy one again.

I second the non autozone/advance deal, the one my 98 p71 came with was a palladium one at advance with a lifetime replacement deal. I have driven the car about 1k miles since I bought it and have had to cash in on that replacement deal 3 times now. First it didn't engage, then the regulator was bad then it just charged too low \:\( The one i got from them was originally a motorcraft(but a rebuilt from advance) so hopefully it lasts alittle longer heh.

The PD put a Bosch in mine. I'm sure they've tried others in the past and have found Bosch to be better than most.

Unless you can have YOUR alternator rebuilt by a local electrical shop (yellow pages), I would NEVER EVER buy a "rebuilt" alternator OR starter.

Get a recycled OE one and save about $150 and a LOT of headaches.
