Just brought home my 04 CVPI. Drove it all the way from the bay here to sac. Already worries. There is a strange rattling noise coming from under the car, i dont know anything about cars so i cant tell you what part specifically. No noise while driving though, only when the car is standing still, like lets say at a stoplight, or at the drive thru where i first noticed it. Took a look at the engine and everything looks fine. Belts are where they're suppose to be, no unusual movements noticed.

Any thoughts. I will take a pic of the bottom of the car and point to where its coming from, will post it soon. Any early thoughts? I called the guy I bought it from and he told me it might have something to do with a heat displacer near a muffler or something like that, not quite sure I got that right though.

You could try making several sound files, by recording the sound with the microphone in a different place each time, and then post each of the sound files you made along with a description of where the microphone was when you made the recordings. Or maybe there is a more specific way to communicate the problem. Your call.

My Vic now lives in NC. Sold my 98 Mustang. Replaced both with a 2011 Kona Blue Mustang Premium Convertible, Stone Leather interior and a stone colored top - 305 HP V-6 with a 6-speed Automatic.

Yep guys, mainly fastone, clicked on that link and watched the little video. Thats exactly the noise that I'm getting, under the same conditions, when in park, ideling, or hitting the gas.

Gonna go to the shop on Monday to see what can be done. Anyone know about how much a repair like this would cost??? Hopefully not too much =)

Likely either loose CAT shields - or one of the CAT's is bad. Have your dealer take a quick look as they are still under warranty.

Tony, the car is not under warranty. I called him though, and he told me the same thing you all are saying. Must be a damn common problem with those 04's. I just bought the vic today too, and already i gotta problem. Disheartening if you ask me. But I wont complain, cars are cars. [censored] breaks.

The car may not be, but the cats (along with other emissions related equipment) has a federally mandated 8 yr/80,000 mile warranty.

That part to be concerned with in the above-linked text:

What Are Specified Major Emission Control Components?

There are three specified major emission control components,
covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995
and newer vehicles:

* Catalytic converters.

* The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).

* The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD).

Catalytic converters are critical emission control components
that have been installed on most cars and trucks manufactured since
1975. Since engines don't burn fuel completely during the combustion
process, the exhaust contains a significant amount of harmful
pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of
nitrogen. The catalytic converter aids the conversion of these
pollutants to less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, water
vapor, nitrogen, and oxygen before the exhaust is expelled into the
I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific.

Damn too bad. My vic already has over 100K, otherwise I would have qualified for the manufacturer warranty deal. Wanna know some other good news? Just let my mom drive my car, she was pulling it into the garage, and instead of stepping on the break, she hit the gas! Big ole dent from the push-bars in the wall. Sheet rock all falling off and [censored]. Worse yet, the grill is completely broken in, most of the front will have to be replaced. Will post pictures asap. It sucks. Just got it todayu \:\/ But oh well accidents happen. Still a good day!

And thanks to all of you for your prompt response and all your help, makes my day a little brighter ;\)
