Hello All,

I posted a thread sometime back about an ABS light that was on on mom's '96 Grand Marquis. I was advised to get the code read on the module due to the fact that it could be myriad issues and nearly impossible to diagnose with just a light illuminated.

Well, today I took the car to the local Ford dealer. They told me that the entire module is crapped-out and that a replacement would be needed. The parts and labor on this job is $780.00. Do I have "idiot" stamped on my forehead or is this about right for this type of repair? Is it me, or is this a bit pricey? Thanks in advance for your responses. Craig.

Hi Dan,

I apologize for taking so long to reply, and I do appreciate your response.

This is what is on the work order:

CHECK ABS LIGHT ON--EST.
RAN SELF TEST-DTC C1095 PUMP MOTOR CIRCUIT FAILURE.
RAN PINPOINT TEST. NEEDS ABS CONTROL MODULE.

Whatever that means. I'm sure it will mean something to you; it sure doesn't to me. Thanks in advance for your reply. Craig.

Hi Dan,

Turns out, the actual amount of the estimate is $751.53; not $780.00 like I originally posted. Seems someone in accounting messed up. It looks like $132.95 for labor and $571.08 for parts plus tax and shop supplies. Craig.

The motor may be bad.

I assume the light always comes on once you hit ~13mph on the initial drive?

The motor is toast, which is why its so expensive. Do you really want abs, other wise just disconnect it and have regualar non abs brakes. Unless you have $751 to spend.

Probably not related to the failure, but I follow the recommendation of loosening the bleed screw at the brake calipers before compressing them to install new brake pads. That is instead of pushing the fluid back through the system into the master cylinder reservoir if the bleed screws are not loosened.

It seemed that there was a higher failure rate of abs modules due to dirty brake fluid being forced back through them. The debris in the fluid (especially from the larger reservoirs in the front calipers) was messing up the abs module.

Just fyi.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the good information.
'drock: Yes, you know it is funny, I would start that car up and the ABS light was nowhere to be found. I have that "disco" digital dash and once I would start moving that angry little light would come on. I'll be willing to bet it was about 13 mph. This car I'm talking about looks EXACTLY like yours on the OUTSIDE. The INSIDE, well, that is a different story.

Dan: I went ahead and paid them to replace that motor. My 80-year-old mother drives it and I'd feel better if it is as it should be.

I have one other question: That car has traction assist. From what I understand, that works up to 25 mph, and gradually tapers off until it doesn't work at all above 35 mph. I also understand that the motor could overheat due to overuse, but has thermal protection that shuts down the unit until it can cool down. Mom recently attended a county fair and it rained and turned the field she was parked in to mud. Could she have revved the engine, spun the tires, and burned that motor up? Just a thought. Thanks again for the info. Craig.

my '94 had the abs light come on once and grandpa brought it into the local linc-merc service and they "replaced some sensors" when i got the car i decided to see how the abs felt and nailed the brakes on an empty street after a rainstorm. Apparently, "replacing some sensors" meant disconnecting the warning light because it doesnt even come on when i turn the key. My cruise light doesnt come on anymore but t least that still works though (and hopefully when the fire related recall parts are replaced they wont mess it up)

$571.08? It's like closer to $300.00 from Ford. I needed one. I just took the light bulb out of the dash. I don't need ABS. The brakes work fine.

Wow. That seems steep. I was lucking in that the police department that originally ordered my CVPI ordered it without ABS.

Especially when it costs $571.00 to fix. At least we'll get the cruise repaired for free-I hope! It seems there is a recall on some of those years for that cruise control switch that causes fires.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Craig.

No kidding. My CVPI with rear wheel drive, V8 engine, and no ABS reminds me a lot of my 1971 Ford Torino I had when I was a teenager. It feels and handles the way a car should.
