Ok, I know this has been discussed at length a few times, but it was not on my current radar, so I felt it was worth bringing up.

My MGM has an axle code of "C8", I looked at three other MGMs today at the local dealer, they all had the same code listed on the driver's door sticker.

When I look up the "C8" code, ANYWHERE, it shows "2.73 conventional".

Guess what the axle tag says?

3.08 ?!

Now, a little birdy told me that the ONLY Panters to get the 3.08 8.8" RAR after *about* 1993 was the Town Car. 4" longer WB + PI tailshaft housing = no unpleasant harmonics with the 3.08s. And that the "standard" Panter RAR was/is the 2.73 RAR regardless of any other data.

So, you will have to forgive me until this next weekend when I can physically verify the RAR and settle this confusing situation - at least for MY car.

Very odd. I would say STAP dropped in the wrong 03-04 axle assembly, but even the Town Car stopped using 3.08s for 2003+ model year (with 3.27 made standard).
The 3.08 ratio was not available for any 03+ panthers. The 04 GMQ brochure and manuals also only indicate a 2.73 ratio (with optional 3.27) The 04 (and 03, and 05) FSMs also do not list 3.08 as an available axle ratio for any panther.

If it does indeed have a 3.08 ratio, I guess the error was made at the axle assembly's manufacturing plant?

Have you noticed any driveline noises?

Not in THIS car, but my old '99 with the 3.08 RAR did display some harmonics that were not there with the 3.55s. Another member that had a similar CVPI also changed to 3.08s (they are CHEAP and plentiful) and noticed the same thing I did. It was not a vibration, but a harmonic sound - I mean you could hear the change but not typically feel it.

my 89 town car and my 98 grandmarquis both had axle codes on the door that didn't exist in the ford shop manual. weird. that always irked me.

I wonder why Ford doesn't offer 3.31s for the Panthers.

I went and redecoded my axle and door tags last week trying to figure out what right and whats not.

My door tag say I should have 3.55 open rear end. My axle tag says 3.55 locked. when I had an oasis ran on my car it came up with 3.55 locked, and I know for a fact that i do have a tlock.

According to http://www.carsdirect.com ALL '04 GMQs got the 2.73 RAR as standard - which we already knew.

Watch your sources, according to Edmunds.com, which is often referenced ( http://www.edmunds.com/used/2004/mercury/grandmarquis/100295449/safety.html ) traction control is not even an option on my '04. That's funny, why then is it included in the Owner's Guide, and what is the "TC" switch on the dash for?

For 2004, Traction Control was not available for the BASE GS.

It was, however, standard equipment for the GS convenience, LS Premium and LS ultimate.

my 98 grandma quis has a "58" axle code on the vc label. the shop manual only lists 1,3,4, and D as possible rear axles. as for the 89 tc, it had a 3.55 trakloc, but the vc label said something else.
