I cant see the road at night. My headlights on my CVPI are pointed sharply downward towards the pavement. I need to adjust the headlights upward so i can see farther down the road at night. I have tried everything to unscrew those plastic bolts so I can adjust the headlights upward. They are impossible to take off. I have tryed a pliars and I stripped one of them. I tryed a hammer and screwdriver to budge them...i cracked the plastic bolt. Why would Ford put plastic bolts on like that where you cant even find the correct tool to unscrew them?

Can anyone help me?

I hope you were kidding about "breaking off" the plastic nuts... Those "plastic nuts" are part of the adjusting assembly. You rotate the threaded stud to adjust the headlamps. You can use either a 4mm open/box ended wrench or a special headlight tool. I recommend the 4mm ignition wrench.

BTW, my 00 HPP came from the factory with the headlamps aimed 24" below spec. The factory uses a mechanical VHAD tool that was obsoleted decades before the 2000 MY.

No im not kidding..I cracked the f'n plastic nut. I got so mad I threw the hammer and screwdriver on the ground and walked away angry as hell....The last thing I want to do is to start breaking things on my crown vic. I love that car.

I 'll go to advance auto to get a 4mm ignition wrench. thanks.

Why do great things always have to get complicated? Special tools? Special access? Difficult reach?

My 83 has some phillips head screws easily accessible without moving or removing anything. I could almost do it during a red light stop it is so easy. Don't even have to open the hood as they adjust from the front.

It cost me $20 to have the dealership properly aim the headlights for me. Time and money well spent.

Ford will probably adjust it for nothing. Only takes them minutes.

Mom took her 2001 Windstar because the headlights were not aimed right. They did it for nothing. Same thing with my 06.

too bad you did not do a search before you broke stuff off?
its a 4 mm Friction ratchet you can find them at Carquest. Its 25 bucks...The dealership here in San Jose wants $70 to adjust them..I got the tool for $25 and saved my $45
Good Luck! Next time try to do a search beforehand.

A 4mm ignition wrench = 4mm combination wrench. I bought one for under $10. The special tool is a friction ratchet and is less versatile because if you back up the stud enough, you can't remove the ratchet due to inadequate fender clearance. The 4mm wrench is easier to use and less expensive. I think Sears even had a full set for $10.

You do nothing with the plastic "nuts." You adjust the METAL stud with the hex head (the thing with threads that is surrounded by the plastic nut). The top stud is for vertical aim, the bottom stud is for horizontal aim. Touch only the top stud for adjusting the height of the beam. At this point, I recommend going to the dealer. You may need to buy a new headlamp as well.
