I did a little searching but couldn't find the exact same problems....

Whether I'm using the A/C or heat, the blower will more often than not fail to go to full speed. I have to turn the thumb wheel all the way up to get it to blow on high speed. But sometimes it WILL go to max speed on it's own but rarely. It seems to work fine otherwise. The highest it will go on automatic is what I guess would be equal to med-high speed on a manual climate control car.

Also, it used to "wait" to turn on the blower on cold mornings until there was sufficient heat to blow out of the vents. It doesn't do that anymore....

Try running the self-test and see if anything pops up:

Heater blower motor is fixed at low speed when engine coolant temp. is below 50ø C (120øF) and heating is required.(b)

 Quote:
If engine coolant temperature fails to reach 50øC (120øF) after 3 1/2 minutes of
operation, the heater blower motor speed will increase and the windshield defroster door will shift from
defrost position to floor position

The system will normally increase fan speed after a few (3.5) minutes even if the engine has not warmed up enough.
If yours is doing this immediately it sounds like the EATC is ignoring the engine coolant temperature

On all of our EATC Ford vehicles the fan speed will rarely go to MAX (as when you push the thumbwheel all the way, tripping the hi-speed relay) unless you set it at or near the extremes of the temperature setting (60 for a/c, 90 for heat)

Yes, I should have mentioned that setting it at 60 or 90 doesn't change anything.

When the blower starts on a cold morning, I also should have mentioned it starts off slow and slowly increases as the engine warms up. But I thought the blower used to stay off entirely until the engine started to warm up but I can't remember for sure...

Oops, just relaized it had to be on AUTO for the blower to "wait" for the engine to warm up. I had been using FLOOR which is still auto temp and fan operation but apparently doesn't afford the above mentioned blower delay.

But.....the original issue remains. Blower won't go on high when in auto mode.....

Blower motor resistor or Blower motor resistor pigtail. I had a problem with both although I don't have the EATC.......

But it goes to full speed if I do it manually..... And very rarely automatically.

There is no blower motor resistor on EATC cars - a blower motor speed controller is used (though on the -'97s it's connector is also prone to corrosion)

That's normal operation. Even in AUTO mode the blower will be on, only at slowest speed until the engine coolant temperature warms up.

(On '92-'04s this was done with a cold engine lockout switch (sensor mounted inline of heater hose), '95+ do it over the SCP databus with PCM supplying ECT temp to EATC)

I have no idea why your blower motor isn't going to FULL speed automatically
If it goes to full speed manually the speed controller, motor, and wiring is fine - as the full speed relay gets tripped by the EATC when you push the thumbwheel up.

Oh well, it's not a big deal I guess. Was hoping for an easy fix. It's been bugging me since I bought the car but I can live with it. Not throwing money at it. Thanks.
