I bought a 97 crown vic with "no oil pressure". I put in a new oil sending unit and I also grounded out the sending unit wire and the gauge went to half way so I replaced the oil pump (not fun). After I replaced the oil pump the gauge still shows no pressure. I pulled the sending unit and oil gushed out. When I had the front timing cover and valve covers off there was no scoring on the cam lobes. I will pick up a real oil pressure guage on Friday.

How far does the factory oil "pressure" gauge normaly go when grounded out? Any thing I should look for as the possible cause.

As you may have discovered by now, the oil pressure gauge is little more than an idiot light with a pointer.

If you ground the wire going to the sending unit, the "oil pressure gauge" will go to it's midpoint.

My oil gauge is 3/4 every time now. I had the no oil pressure problem too. I replaced the sending unit and then the oil pump, still no difference. Turned out that the oil pump pickup tube was 98% blocked with sludge. Once I fixed that. A nice 3/4 every time.

5 months before one bad technician cleaned this pipe and filter, i found that the engine oil pan is so hard to remove.

Found something interesting when I pulled off the plastic shield underneath the car to change the oil and put the power steering pump back on. The factory oil cooler lines were removed and blocked off, could this possibly cause my problem. I am not sure that sludge in the pan is causing it since under the valve covers was very clean with no sludge of any kind.

I am having the oil pressure issue right now. I haven't tried much for diagnosis yet, but I would like a few opinions before I go tear into it tonite. Saturday morning, when I started the car up, the oil pressure guage was "dancing around." I guess since this is only a glorified light that it means it was getting pressure and then losing it. Or kept dropping below 6psi or whatever pressure the switch trips the guage. After about a minute of warmup, it was fine. The next morning, I started it up and had NO pressure. I got scared and shut it off. Re-started it and shut it off a few more times...nothing. I got a flashlight and shined it in the oil hole and could see oil slinging off the cam. When I walked back over to look at the guage it was back to normal. Same thing today...it took about 3 minutes of idling for the guage to come up to normal. I am slightly confused, because it only does this on cold startups, which almost sounds like mechanical problems...but the engine is not noisy when the guage shows that it has no pressure, and I can see oil moving around. I can't imagine the pickup tube being sludged up on a 9 year-old police car because the departments usually keep up on maintenance. It just seems too consistant to be a bad sender. I am going to put a pressure guage on it tonite and see what it has. I am hoping I haven't been driving around on like 7psi or something.

Absolutely causing trouble! Stop running this engine now. I hope it is not too late.

I just hooked the mechanical oil pressure guage to my car and was relieved to see that it had pressure. 75psi on a cold start, then it tapered down to 60 when the car warmed up. I'd say that's pretty good for 112k miles. I am pretty confident the $7 oil pressure switch fixed it, but I won't know till morning if the problem has gone away because it has to sit all night to duplicate what it was doing the past few days. Just curious of what you guys have gotten for oil pressure readings...please contribute.

Don't worry when I bought the car I picked it up on a car trailer and I did replace the oil filter adapter today and now I have pressure. Wish I would have seen the oil cooler blocked off earlier it would have saved me a lot of time and a few bucks. Luckly the guy I bought the car from bought the oil pump and gave it to me. Atleast now it has a new pump and new valve cover gaskets as well as the front timing cover gasket.
