i would almost guarantee 3.08 gears, that was standard on the early cars.

the number expresses the rear axle ratio.

2.73:1 (2.73 revolutions of the driveshaft to 1 revolution of the axles)
3.08:1 (3.08 revolutions of the driveshaft to 1 revolution of the axles)
3.27:1 (3.27 revolutions of the driveshaft to 1 revolution of the axles)
etc.

the 2.73 gears were used on later base panthers that were equipped with 4r70w transmission. 3.08 gears were used on the early aero (and box?) panthers that were equipped with AOD/AODE transmissions.

i believe the AOD/AODE transmissions used a higher overdrive gear. 0.67:1 compared to 0.70:1 on the 4r70w if i remember correctly. which means that 2.73 in a later panther will behave similar to an earlier panther equipped with 3.08 gears.

the 3.27 and 3.55 gears were used on police and taxi models as well as HPP and towing package panthers. lincoln town car used the same range of ratios (2.73-3.55 i believe), but i do not know what ratio was used on what packages.

2.73 and 3.08 gears are considered better for highway use because they result in a lower engine speed for a given vehicle speed, which results in somewhat better highway mileage. some people experience slightly lower city mileage.

3.27 and 3.55 gears are considered better for city use, towing, acceleration and 'spirited' driving. they produce higher engine speeds at a given vehicle speed, generally produce poorer highway mileage. some people experience slightly better city mileage with these ratios.

So out of curiosity, I've got a 99 MGM all stock, was looking at 3.55 and 3.27 gears but I don't know which would be best? and what about the speedometer, will it need adjustment? If so how is that done?

well what are you looking for? do you do more highway or more city driving.

3:27's are probably the best all around gear. 3:55's are starting to push it with the highway mileage (if that is a concern) if you want all out acceleration then go 3:73 and make sure you have a trac-loc.

as for the speedo yes you will need to get a new speedo gear that goes in the side of the trans. These can be purchased through the board sponsored vendors or a dealership. If you do a search you can find out what color speedo gear you will need depending on what gear ration you want.

basically all around I'm looking to be quicker, kind of looking for the performance of a mustang GT but I do both City and highway driving. if I do the gear will the stock motor handle it fine? or do I need to beef other things up before I do the gear? Also if I find an interceptor at the junk yard I could pull off the 3.55 and the speedo gear all in one shot and it would work with my stock setup right? I've got single exhaust but cold air from afe on there plus about to throw an airaid throttle body spacer

your signature shows AOD transmission, so you have the 0.67:1 overdrive gear. details about the transmission are not as important because there isn't really anything you can change with the ratios.

the AOD (automatic overdrive) was used in pre-92 panthers and for the first part of the 92 model year. AOD-E was used in the later part of 92 and through the 94 model year.

because you have the AOD transmission, you almost certainly have 3.08:1 gears.

THanks rizzo without this tag info I wouldn't have known what I was looking for at the yard today! (Even though I only found 3.27 and 3.73 gears can't find any 3,55's but plenty of 3.73's with trac lock!) Since I didn't have any luck at the yard on gears cause I don't want to tune and everything for the 3.73 that's why I'm going for the 3.55 so I can still run basically a stock setup; I did grab a police drive shaft for 25 and a full exhaust with mufflers for 28 bucks Now if only someone would wreck something with that 3.55 gear ratio I'll almost be set!
