I recently tuned up the a/c system in my 1998 crownvic. First part of the project was to replace the o-rings.

the condensor in the 1998 crown vic uses "peanut" connections.

the passenger's side top shock absorber nut is really easy to access with the lower liquid line removed

the spring-locks at the compressor manifold tubes took a little persistence to remove. had to spin the spring lock tool around the connection several times to break the corrosion free.

here's some of the old o-rings next to the new o-rings.

the old o-rings were still reasonable flexible, but they were pressed kind of flat and didn't seal too well anymore.

here are the flexible hoses off of the car

all of the spring-lock connections appear to use 3 o-rings in 1998

here's one of the peanut condensor fittings

this is the hose that was in front of the compressor clutch when the old clutch overheated badly and threw molten rubber at it.

the muffler in this hose appears to be just an empty cylinder

decided to install a new lower liquid line as the earlier cars often get lots of corrosion on this peice.

the hoses with the new o-rings installed

here are the two nuts which hold the hoses onto the condensor. note that pre-1998 cars used spring lock connections for the condensor.

and the hoses back on the condensor

you'll want to remove the battery from the car to get at these connections

a new accumulator/drier and a/c compressor are being installed.

the yellow tag on the top says that the compressor is pre-filled with 7oz of pag46 oil.

you'll want to install the manifold block onto the compressor before bolting the compressor to the engine block because the exhaust manifold is directly above the pinch bolt.

also, for installation it's easier if you leave the hoses off of the compressor. if the hoses are installed, you'll need a prybar to get everything lined up properly so that the bolts will pass through the compressor into the engine block mounting bosses.

and you'll want to also want to transfer the wiring bracket from your old compressor onto the new compressor.

the new compressor came pre-gapped and the clutch did not need to be removed to insert shims.

you'll want some pag oil to lubricate the new o-rings prior to installation. and also to pour into the accumulator/drier.

you'll also want some vacuum pump oil. i had to mail order this stuff as the local parts clerks didn't have a clue was vacuum pump oil was and always wanted to sell me pag or ester oil instead.

pulled the system down to close to -30 with a vacuum pump to boil off the moisture in the system.

the blue hose is connected to the low pressure suction side. the red pressure hose to the high side.

let the car sit overnight for several hours, and the system still had a nice vacuum on it in the morning. jumpered the a/c cycle switch with a paperclip, and used a can tap to install 3 12oz cans of r134 refrigerant. (factory spec is 38 oz of refrigerant so the system is a couple ounces under-charged).

But i am now getting vent discharge temperatures inside the car at ~35 fahrenheit and the accumulator is sweating nicely from condensing humidity in the ambient air.
