Hey All,

I am getting a whining sound out of my radio when I am accelerating when in sat mode with my new XM installation. I remember a long time ago this was a problem with older cars, but I didn't think it would do it here, any suggestions?

do you have any amps and or aftermarket radio? It could a ground issue.

Definitely sounds like a grounding issue. Is the ground of the xm module connected to the same ground as the radio? are all the audio cables kept separate from any cables carrying power?

Depending on how its hooked into the head unit you can buy a ground loop isolator (noise filter) which should dampen the whine, but that should be second to checking all the wiring.

I had the same thing happen with a set of speakers i hooked up in the trunk, turns out i just needed to route some wires differently.

It maybe the way I routed the antenna wire too. I will check it all out this weekend, and get back to all y'all. Its not bad when louder music is playing, but softer music, it gets annoying. As for the way it draws power, it gets its ground and power off the radio. Its a factory CD6 radio. My XM installation is posted here >> Factory Like XM Radio Installation

it might be the antenna. but isnt xm digital? I'm no expert and the antenna may be picking up stuff, but since its digital it would seem like your noise is coming from inbetween the module and the radio.

In my experience RCA cables tend to be the ones to pick up the most noise. Is everything wrapped and away from live wires?

Yeah there are RCA Cables going from the XM Tuner Box in the Glove Compartment passing up through the limited space between the air ducts behind the dash to the interface behind the Radio. I never thought about the RCA cables. Yes, XM is digital, so your right no noise should be coming from there.

it could also be the connections on the rca out/in puts on the unit it self. I had this issue with my pioneer radio and i actually had to add a wire to the rca connection to ground.

yea i'm pretty sure thats what a ground loop isolator does, you can pick em up for 10-20 bucks at any car audio shop.

Sounds like the problems cars have with the radio when they dont have non-interferrance sparkplug wires.

Exactly, however I have no spark plug wires LOL, all COP. I remember this would happen to me occasionally on a CB I had back in the day of my 1988 Grand Marquis

Ok, finally took care of the whining noise. It was what all of you guessed. I put in a pair of RCA cables between the interface and the tuner box with a ground loop insulator. It now sounds crystal clear. Thanks to all.

also avoid running speaker, antenna, etc cables along or near positive power wires. that will cause that also
