I've often wondered, will fire help it come off faster? [hehehe]

Maybe I'll try the propane torch on the next sedan I buy...

Since you don't mention anything about paint and finish, and getting the old glue off ;-) removing the top is easy. Just pull it off. =-)

its a fairly involved process... pulling the vinyl off is the easy part. removing the old padding and glue is the hard part. count on spending many hours into the wee hours of the morning stripping, scraping, sanding and preping.

One member went so far as to remove the headliner from the car so he could remove chrome trim pieces that go across the roof.

I'm sure that if that job is attempted by someone that has never done one of those before he will end up talking to himself & cussing the car. A friend of mine that has a 1979 LTC had the vinyl roof replaced at an upholstery shop outside of Kansas City. The price was $700. The car only has 80k original miles on it & he is finally going to sell the car.

Thanks guys i was just pondering. I really like the look of the cars without the soft tops. it isnt in bad shape or anything but i had to do a bunch of body work to the actual car itself and painted the whole thing flat black and wanted to take the tan top off.

depending on the vinyl roof setup it has... there was coach roof style or standard big rear window. the coach rof has fiberglass type shell that would cause bigger issues. get a pic of the of the car. i did the removal on girlfriends car to save on cost of new vinyl install. below are pictures of top removed on her standard type vinyl roof. you would need to remove the trim over the top, around rear doors, around rear window if there is trim, and stuff. you will need to remove interior stuff to access the nuts that hold the trim in place that go over the top and just behind the doors. there are after vinyl install pictures below too.
