AKA_Rizzo AKA_Rizzo Posting Addict Registered: 03/06/04 Posts: 21652 Loc: Romulus,MI	I have to actually get under the car to see exactly whats going on here, But a friends 2004 has a drivers side exhaust leak. He's been quoted $1200 for a new head and one new manifold... I think that stinks. What are the visible signs of a cracked head ? If I want to drill,tap and rebolt his manifold what should I know about this before doing it ? To help spot the leak areas I want to run some Seafoam thru his car and watch for where the smoke comes from. Michigansquadcar Michigansquadcar Over the Hill Registered: 02/22/01 Posts: 4665 Loc: Southeast michigan	Its a REAL bear of a job. What happens is the exhaust manifold studs break off. Occasionally they will break leaving the surface of the stud sticking out of the head (leaving something to grip onto), BUT most of the time they break flush or underneath the surface of the head. There may not be room to get a drill in there on a Crown Vic. My current project is a V10 F250 with 4 studs broken on both heads. They are broken below the surface of the head. I tried to drill x1 hole and use an extractor to get it out. After breaking the extractor I had the truck towed to a local shop for them to deal with it. larryo340 larryo340 Poobah Registered: 11/10/08 Posts: 7045 Loc: Long Island	I think that if the car is running fine with the exception of the exhaust leak I would doubt that the cylinder head is cracked. My moneys on the manifold being the only problem, and if I'm right that shop knows that the manifold bolts to the head really suck on a 4.6 and break just went with the "easy" job. I would take a look first, and not use Seafoam just yet. A cracked head ? C'mon really .. If it's of any use to this, When he bought the car it came with 3 cats. Two cats on this side and one on the other .. Im about to get my driver rear cat replaced by Ford because it is rattling. They already did the passenger for rattling. They had a bad run of rear catalysts in 2004. frankthefordman frankthefordman n00b Registered: 11/15/09 Posts: 43 Loc: grandview	i have never evere seen a cracked head on a 4.6l well the one thay shot thou the floor with a shot gun but the studs do brake alot sometimes if you have a 90deg drill and rev drill bits thay will turn right out other wise you will need to drill out not fun on cv and cold ford had a bad run on cats for most of the cv and gm cars the is a tsb for rattle and just so every one knows cats are coverd for 8yrs and 80k mi on all cars _________________________ 96 gm swaping parts for my 96 pi for the best of both worlds comfort and perfomance
