First off hello to all of the fellow Crown Vic enthusiasts, I'm new around here! Ok so moving on to my 03 P71's problems. I just started driving this car about 2 weeks ago and EVERY time I turn the headlights on they are on for about a minute, then I hear a click under the dash and they turn off for a minute, then they turn back on, at first they did this twice, now its 5 or so times. This only happens when they are turned on at first, once they cycle through this they stay on and have no issues. The only things that turn off are the headlights themselves, the parking lights stay on. When this happens I just pull back on the headlight high beam lever and hold it until its done turning on and off. The headlights still work by using the high/low beam lever and holding it manually. I was thinking maybe a relay is going out but I would tend to think that if it was a relay this would happen after they have been on for a while, not within a minute of being turned on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would suggest a headlight relay upgrade.

The relay in your LCM sux, It's kinda common.

If you get a relay upgrade you will 1 get much brighter headlights and 2 reduce the load carried by the relay. After wards it will only take a small amount of voltage to close the relay as all the current actually needed for the headlights will come directly from the battery.

Alight, its been going on for a while and it was getting a bit frustrating, I'm VERY glad I'm not the only one to have this problem. Thanks for the advice/info. I PM'ed him so hopefully this will cure my problem so I can start in with the upgrades!

Ok well I did the headlight relay upgrade kit from member BH1976, which is an AWESOME kit but it did not fix my problem. I tried another headlight switch but it made no difference, my next guess it the headlight control module... Any thoughts?

Sounds like an issue with the internals of the LCM, might need to replace it.

There's an external relay fix for the LCM to fix the problem. I was reminded that I need to do this myself this morning(headlights just went off on my way to work at 4:30) and I had to hold the 'flash to pass' on for a bit til the lights decided to work again.
Taking out my LCM this afternoon to do it.

Do the LCM relay fix, I just completed it and I have faith in my car restored. It was very straightforward, just make sure you have some patience getting it out until you figure out how the clips connect behind the LCM, also have a security screwdriver to open the LCM there are two security screws securing it closed. Also I broke the circuit board when I removed the old relay, some of the copper upperlayer broke off on the board. I had to solder a jumper wire and it fixed it very simply, but had I not realized this would have a non working LCM at this point. After replacing do either melt or cut a hole in the plastic to run your wires out. I did this on my 2005, so they are still affected.

My old 97 used to do this. Bad circuit breaker.

Im just starting to have the same problem with mine. Sometimes they just wouldnt come on when i started my car but now theyre starting to go off while im driving, forcing me to hold in my high-beams and drive (to the dismay of oncoming drivers. My friend has the same problem and he replaced the combination and headlight switches and neither one helped. I believe my problem is the combo switch however because sometimes they will come back on from just messin with combo switch.
