I saw the Quaife differential also mentioned. Does anyone have experience with this company?

The Torsen T-2 has pretty much been superceded by the T-2R, but you can still get the basic T-2 if you want it. I was hellbent on getting a T-2R until I started reading Sam Strano's reviews. He's probably the foremost expert on aftermarket performance diffs and he shies away from the T-2/T-2R. I guess when the company changed hands a few years ago they started using inferior metal stock and the gears just grenade after a few K miles. If you can find a decent used Torsen -2001 is your best bet that is believed when the changeover occurred.

Quaife makes a helical gear diff similar to the Torsen and supposedly it's stronger and has a higher bias-ratio than the Torsens. I know a lot of Focus guys use Quaifes, but I'm unaware of any 8.8 applications. That's for you to look into.

As far as the TrueTrac I don't know anything about it. If I were you, I would still get in touch with Sam Strano. He seems like he really knows his stuff and should be able to guide you further www.stranoparts.com Just don't tell him I sent you cause I have yet to contact him myself and he has no idea who I am. \:D

Thanks Prodigal.

Turbo2256, what I am looking for is to plant power reliably onto the road. Open differentials although standard are lacking in this respect. This is for further upgrades down the line for my vehicle.

Not exactly what I ment. Is this just for street and some drags. Road race and street. How much power how ruff are you going to be on the drive train?

I am looking for street not track. I also do not want to service the clutches in a diff every 10K mi or so. Reliablility is very important and I consider lifetime warranties a plus. However I would like to approach 500+HP at the wheels. I consider upgrades to be sequential and I do not want to revisit due to inadequate planning. Overengineered for reliability is not an issue. This car is also my daily driver however.

Hello,

I did talk to Sam Strano about differentials. He had a few interesting things to say about these differentials. One is that the gear type differentials include the Detroit Trutrac (made by Eaton), the Quaife differential made by an English company (very expensive at ~$1600), and the Torsen TR-2 (not recommended). Of the clutch type differentials the Ford Track Loc, the Auburn, and the Eaton are available for our cars. In his experience, the Quaife differentials do not work out quite as well as the OEM open differentials after seeing one installed into a rear wheel drive BMW that drove worse with a Quaife than with the OEM open differential. This is not to dis however the quality of the Quaife differential which is the only differential with a lifetime warranty. For our applications in daily driving Sam feels that the Eaton would be the best choice for our cars.

However there is a new company called Autotech that is scaling up production on differentials. This is a totally new differential that is still in testing and would need to be made for our platform.

I wish however that Chris of ADTR would be willing to weigh in here on this topic.

Hope this helps.

I have an Auburn in my F150 4WD. Its been there for over 100,000 miles. Towing, off road, racing, trips, Pulling people out of mud, snow, ditches. TAhe truck has a juced up 400 with over 400 lbs of torq. I dont know of anyone that has broke one hot rodding with one. Using a clutch style unit I would go with this. The reason they use cone clutches not flat plate ones.
Trutrac is the best bet for gear locker. Detroit Locker will last the longest and realy locks, like its a spool.
