2005 P71 battery fail.

My '05 Crown Vic decided to not start this morning after 2 days of no use and cold weather. I charged it for 15mins and got the volts past 12 and it turned, altenator is charging it at 14.2 volts. Looks like the battery can't keep a charge for a day or two of no use. What's the volt/amp requirements for a 05 P971? I'd like a reliable battery so so i was looking at the Optima. If the drain is more than 80 mA than something is draining your battery. The best battery I know of is a Motorcraft battery. The bigger of the two. Around $115 at my dealer. I would recharge the one you have and check the drain with an ampere-meter (multimeter).
If you see the drain that is much higher, e.g. over 1 Ampere. Start pulling fuses one by one until you identify the circuit group that causes the drain.

Probably just a dead cell. Optima batteries are a waste of money, the red top is designed for extreme heat and vibration resistance, which won't really do you much good.
Go with Motorcraft if money isn't an issue, otherwise just go by CCA and length of warranty.

What is an acceptable range for drain without having to worry about the battery going dead? 10 milliamps was mentioned in the video.
My battery generally does not have any problems in the summer but in the winter it sounds weak most mornings, especially if really cold.
If kept on the shelf for months it will keep a green eye but sometimes gets a very dim green eye or even red eye if installed in the vehicle during the winter months. I think I have to do a drain test.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm performing a drain test right now. I used a light tester on the negative cable > neg battery terminal and got a fairly bright light. I left the battery unplugged for 15mins as well to allow the computer to go into sleep mode. I'm not to familiar with volt meters, but i'll try to look for the milliamps. Funny thing is after the month of owning it I had zero issues until now with this drain. Very odd it would just cause problems now. These are the instructions I used: If no other electrical accessory is causing the battery to drain overnight a manual draw check of the electrical system will need to be performed. What this means is you will be checking the electrical draw the battery has on it when the car is locked up, with the key in the "off" position". First open the hood and disable the under hood illumination light, if equipped. Next, with the key off and the doors locked wait 15 minutes, then disconnect the battery cable on the negative side. (The 15 minute wait allows the computers to go into "sleep mode" and shuts down all electrical). Attach a test light between the negative battery cable end and the negative battery terminal. The test light should illuminate dimly or not at all. If the test light is on brightly there is a strong electrical draw in the system. To locate this electrical draw start removing fuses one at a time. When the test light goes out the circuit in question has been located. You will need a car repair manual to identify all accessories in a particular circuit, repair as needed and re-check system

if ur going REDTOP and purchasing it at sams club is an option for u, id strongly rec. going there. If i recall the redtops are like 139 or less...as opposed to autozone, advance, etc... they sell for damn near 200

It's the battery.
I left it unplugged for 1 hour and it went from a full charge of 13 volts to 10 volts. I'll probably buy a Motorcraft.

I heard that Optima was bought out (not sure how long ago) and that the older batteries are definitely better than the newer ones.
I have had a RedTop in my Jeep for the past 2 years. Just recently if I don't start it for about a month or so or more it will be dead and I will have to trickle charge it. NO STANDARD CHARGING WITH THE OPTIMA BATTERIES!

I would go with the aftermarket motorcraft, energizer or duralast gold. Stay far away from anything made by exide. Deka are really good too.
03+ OEM ford batteries that ship with the car are junk. The older ones back in 99 lasted forever. I still have the original in my 99' and 00'. My 99' lincoln with all the automatic crap lasted till early 09' as I bought the car it had a brand new wal mart battery.
And the longest lasting battery to date I have seen was my aunts 93 E-350 cargo van that had its oringinal battery until 08'. I was the one who changed it out. I even washed the inside of the battery and cut it open. Plates were sulfated but were not decomposing.
