Wish to convert rear drums on my 1991 crown vic wagon to Disc brakes. Any thoughts on whats the easiest and cheapest way to make a quality conversion. I have the 8.8 rear. Most conversion kits I see online are for 9" rears. Is it easier to just swap out the rear. What other Fords have the same width and would fit. Thanks in advance for any help.

92-02 rear's are nearly a direct swap. Just swap out the backing plate. Just need to figure out the parking brake cable and so a little customizing of the brake hoses and lines.

BZZZZZZZZ! Incorrect! 98-up use the Watts link rear suspension. So anyway, 92-97 will bolt in with no modifications other than e-brake cables and proportioning valve (master cyl).

I was ASSuming he was talking about replacing the entire rear end, not just bolting things on...

Also need 16" wheels at minimum to fit over the brakes.

Oh, I was just assuming he meant just swapping the backing plates. My bad. That's just how'd I'd do it.

Yes..... Rear disc is do-able. NO you do NOT need 16" wheels for rear disc conversion.

92-97 rear disc parts work the best, however up to 02 will still bolt on.

my rear disc parts came off a 91 town car.
You need the rear disc mounting plate from a parts car. Salvage parts will work, but I chose to buy new calipers, rotors, pads, E-brake shoes. you will also need E-brake cables from a rear disc car. Keep in mind town car E-brake cables are different because of the longer wheel base.

its also usefull to cut the fittings off the hard brake lines from the salvage car. I used those to modify the rear brake lines to accept the rear disc hoses.
However another member on GMN discovered front brake hose from a 82-86 vic worked for his rear disc conversion.

read here..... starting with post #306

Will be changing the rear not shure as to what I will find in the yards. Wound my car to 7200 RPM hit second and blew the carrier almost out of the rear cover. The bearing caps are in dozens of pieces, cover is split in half, expect more dammage upon disassembly. Most likely remove the complete rear and scrap it.
