I have had a problem with my car in the rain since I got it (and its always been in the family, so as far back as I remember). The wipers, especially at higher speeds, skip over the windsheild and make a lot of noise (noisy at almost all speeds). The problem has persisted even after a windsheild replacement (stress crack). I know of a tsb on the issue about replacing the wiper arms (if i remember correctly), but havn't been able to justify the expense in relation to just putting rain-x on it (no wipers needed at speed). I have tried a variety of wiper brands and types, with Anco being my favorite, but the problem is still there.

I was wondering if anyone had tried a self-fix on one of these cars, and if helped. My plan was to take the wiper arm in a vice and bend it a little tighter toward the windsheild, then repaint it (needs paint anyway.. the rest of the car is good but these are showing wear). Good or bad idea? I ask because I'll just leave it alone if messing with it might create even more problems.

I'm fairly new to the Panther platform myself, having only recently acquired a 2000 P71 Crown Vic.

But there's some discussion of the problem here:

http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1657545#Post1657545

I did put a tiny bit more downward bend in my left arm, after noting (with blade removed) that the hinge in the arm seems to stop before it really reaches the windshield. But very much extra bend will affect how the middle of the arm fits that parking stop when shut off.

From what I can gather, left wiper skipping at speed (right in the middle of the blade, in front of the driver's eyes) seems to be a common problem. Personally, I think it's mostly aerodynamic. I'll look for an arm with a stronger spring, but I'm also going to look for some of those wiper blades with airfoils, or some add-on airfoils to keep the blade down against the windshield at highway speeds.

I'm also going to go back to carrying Rain-X in our vehicles.

Make sure that the flat part of the wiper arm is parallel to the glass. If it's not the blade can and will most likely chatter. Slide an adjustable wrench onto the flat section of the arm and bend in the necesseary direction to make it level with the glass.

you can get a product called wiper snuggies, basically it is a spring that hooks on over your wiper arms.

would be cheaper than replacing the arms and would let you know if it is a problem with the springs being worn out,

they work good and do not look bad on the vehicle.
The Part# 7353922
Available at Napa Autoparts
and i have seen similar products at truck stops also

I like that even better. Especially for $5. That would also cure the highway speed issue that seems to plague all crown vics, or at least i would think so.

I run Bosch Icon's and they stay flat to the glass at highway speeds...no chatter \:\)

Using Rain-X has made my wipers work much smoother. It takes some effort, but it works for me.
