I have an 06 lx with a overhead console that looks just like the one in this thread: http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2064336

The compass has stopped working so i was going to take it down and have a peek inside. There is one screw at the back that came out easily, but i couldn't get the unit to budge after that. What is the secret to getting these off?

Also the screw looked odd, it was a shiny silver color and had threads that looked more like a wood/drywall screw than an automotive screw. Is this normal?

i believe there is one Phillips screw in the front of it. remove that then the rest is just held in by clips so just pull it down

IIRC the phillips screw is hidden in the sunglass compartment. Open it and remove the screw.

Then as noted ... pull it down. Grasping the rear of the console makes it easier.

I tried pulling on it gently after i removed the screw but it didn't feel like it was going to budge, and i didn't wanna risk yanking on it without knowing what im doing.

The Phillips head screw isn't hidden on mine, and i don't have a sunglasses compartment.

Thanks for the tips guys. ill give it a try soon.

My 04 has a console like that no sunglass door!! The good one is longer, the short one works with the sunroof cars too(but has no space for the missing sunroof switch)

The "long" overhead console with sunglasses holder came from 2003 Marauder and GMQ LS cars (M-75) without a sunroof.
All 2004 Marauder and GMQ LS cars (M-70 and M-75), with or without sunroof, received a decontented "short" overhead console...

I suspect that CV LX models would follow along similarly.

Here's the "long" overhead console from a 2003 that I installed in my 2004 GMQ LS; the "short" overhead console only has the top third of this long model... just the compass readout, the six pushbuttons, and the two map lights... the sunglasses holder and the courtesy light are deleted:
