Ok i was changing to the 180 degree stat since i got a custom tune. i see some on here running 160 thermostats. At what temp is to low? 160 seems really low. i was trying to do a poll but it wouldn't let me in this section.

so long story short what temp and why? and do you have any problems out of running the one you do?

195* because thats stock and I have no mods or tune to support a colder thermostat. 160* is what the stock tune considers "operating temperature" (or is it 165, whatever), so 160* definitely seems too low unless you have some serious mods requiring it.

if you go to low the car wont come out of closed loop. thats why i was asking what temp and if any problems. im sticking with 180, but i have sen people on here saying they use 160 so i was wondering why.

I'm using the 180 degree stat, and no problems, i'd suspect, correct me if i'm wrong, that 160-165 stat for racing applications or blowers because of heat soak. IMOP.

I run a 180* stat because I am tuned for it.

people running 160* state are most likey boosted or run N20 and are tuned for it.

The colder the stat the cooler the engine runs which means the more timing can be added and thus more power.

When you get up in the mods like high compression, boosted, or N2O it produces more heat quicker so they run the cooler stat to help compinsate for that added heat.

Now most should be running the coorisponding cooler heat range plugs to take full effect. For instance I am tuned for the 180* stat and one step cooler plugs. When you go boosted or N2O they usually take a two step cooler plug and 160* stat.

2000 Grand Marquis - 195 because...it is stock and driven like a daily driven car.

1997 Cougar - 180 because it gets driven hard and needs everything it can, tuned to turn on the low and high speed cooling fan at a lower temp to get more out of it, and like others hotter plugs and 91 octane gas.

????????????????????

You mean go in to closed loop??? Which is false...

With the heated o2 sensors the ECM goes to closed loop anytime the engine is at approx 100*F and the o2 sensors are hot enough to give A/F ratio info...

I suppose the minimum temp can be altered with a custom tune but that's the way it is in a stock tune...

Yeah, it won't necessarily stay open loop, it will throw a code for overcooling (I don't remember the code off hand) or..what was it.. something about not reaching proper operating temperature. My car was hovering around 170 max when it threw the code with a bad thermostat. So too much is no good. 180* would be the lowest without tune, 170* would be pushing it if you can find it, but anything lower than 180 I'd recommend a tune, and it may be overkill.

Me personally, Motorcraft stock temperature. Aftermarket ones aren't always the best, good chance the opening is smaller or there are some other less than favorable differences.
