Hi I'm new to the forum and have found a lot of great info here already, but haven't found much on towing capacity.

I have a 2008 Grand Marquis with regular suspension (no air). It's rated for 1,500 lbs of towing capacity. This is my 4th GM and I realize the 4.6L engine in my 2008 is no match for the 460ci in my 74 but still can't understand why a full sized V8 powered rear wheel drive sedan has the same towing capacity as a Toyota Corolla?!

I'd like to tow a landscape trailer with 3 motorcycles across country approx 3,000 lbs. I believe I need a transmission cooler and to augment the rear suspension with air bags or air shocks to keep the car level and maintain handling, but just don't understand the very low recommended capacity.

My other 3 Marquis were fantastic at towing 3,000 lbs (74, 88 & 2001) and I have read that the capacity was lowered to help sell SUV's and trucks at a higher profit margin?

Does anyone here know why the capcity is so low? ...or have an opinon as to why I should or shouldn't tow 3,000 lbs?

Thanks

It has to do with the watts link in the rear suspension. Ford does not recommend anything over 1500. I would say your OK to 2000.....but that as much as I would try to tow.

I also think it has to do with GVCW.

This applies to 98 and up Panthers I think......maybe even earlier.

BTW..... welcome to CVN.

I cant legally tell you your fine on this site.

However, with an auxillary transmission cooler P71 police cars already have em, no use of overdrive, kevlar or ceramic front and rear brake pads-not cheap ones, properly FRAME MOUNTED HIGH RATED HITCH, with good tires on the trailer, and brakes on the trailer, youll be fine 65mph and beelow.

The main concern is the car is already heavy and adding 3,000 lbs will make the total curb weight 6,000+lbs, on the entire drivetrain.

I have towed vehicles with my previous vic for YEARS in excess of 3,900 lbs so I know the rating is BS.

Just dont be hauling with bad tires, bad alighnment, suspension or steering loose, low quality brake pads, improper tire pressures etc, or you can have a very bad day.

Thanks for the quick and informative responses!

I had a 3,500 lbs frame mounted hitch and appropriate wiring installed when I bought the car and have towed a 2 motorcycle trailer and a small boat(Approx. 2,000 lbs) with it for a couple of thousand miles. The rear end does sag a bit, but no noticable handling issues, just have to go slow in and out of gas stations.

I have 55K miles on this GM and will definately be running 4 new tires and have cermic pads installed before I go. (Good advice!)

I plan on installing Air Springs to level the car when towing. In the past I used Air Shocks but they are not available for my car. I found 1,000 lbs capacity Air Springs here... Air Springs Do you think these will resolve any problems with the rear suspension or Watts Linkage?

You said you towed this same amount w/ an '01 marquis w/o issue? There's your answer, the rear suspension is pretty much the same since then, so you'll probably be fine. Boxes and Aeros were rated to tow up to 5000lbs w/ trailer break and weight distributing hitch, but they had a different rear suspension setup (triangulated 4-link vs. parallel 4-link w/ watts linkage).

True I towed a bigger boat with the 01 (approx. 3,000 lbs) but only 100 mile hauls to the lake. I'm planning on towing the motorcycles cross country... 1,900 miles there and 1,900 miles back.

I thought the towing capacity was 3500 lbs with a 300 lb tongue weight on the Class-II hitch. I believe the Class-III hitch has the same towing capacity but then somehow if it is "distributed" it goes up to 6,000 pounds?

Coming from the UHAUL website.....I just bought a UHAUL Class-II hitch, have not installed it yet. Really didn't plan to tow with this car, I have never towed anything, but I figured a hitch would be a good recovery point in the event that I ever did get the car stuck.

As BigMerc96 posted it would be best to us a weight distributing hitch to take the weight off the rear of the car and more on the trailer's axle.

A friend introduced me to an engineer at Valley Hitch, who said the 2,000 # tow limit was nonsense .. I towed a 3,500 # boat hundreds of miles with my 2001 MGM ... No problems at all .. And the OEM load leveling air suspension took care of the tongue weight just fine ...

Answers to -ALL- of the questions are in the Trailer towing section of the owner's manual.
