I have noticed in my last 2 oil change cycles my car has been losing about a quart every thousand miles. I am confused about where the oil is going because I never see any smoke from the exhaust and I do not believe the car had any leaks. All info is in my sig, I am currently using Valvoline synpower 5w30 full synthetic and I run about 5ka between changes with a motorcraft filter. Any help as to what I should do is greatly appreciated.

Get a quality engine flush, like Amsoil Engine Flush or Lubro Moly Pro-Line Engine Flush to clean the ring packs. Dump it in with your old oil, and allow the engine to idle for 15-20 minutes before you drain the oil (do not rev or drive). Replace your PCV valve whilst you're at it, and refill with fresh SynPower 5W-30 and a new FL-820S.

My 97 TC has the oil consumption issue as well. With 220k miles I'd expect oil use because of the mileage. I'd just like to know where it is going because I see no leaks and there is no blue smoke out the exhaust under any conditions.

Well the oil can't just disappear for no reason, if it isn't leaking then it's burning it... At 220K mi my guess would be the valve stem seals, or maybe just a defective PCV valve... Smoke isn't usually obvious until consumption is greater than a qt in 1000 mi...

That's what im saying! Im not surprised its burning, its high miles with mods, I just want to know where its going...Im thinking it may be time to pick up a mark viii engine and start getting ready...

It can be really tough to see that puff of blue, especially from the driers seat because it dissipates quickly. Given the reliability of these engines, especially in the 97-99 years, if the PCV is in good shape, and there is no oil seeping underneath, its probably valve stem seals.

If you're mechanically inclined, it's well worth doing this job yourself. Use the BOK on this site and search the forums as there is lots of good advice available. The first piece of advice, use new valve cover gaskets and grommets. A few didn't and have leaking valve covers.

I will check the PCV valve but if its the valve seals it's not worth the time, I am planning a engine swap in the near future.

FWIW - Had a nice '95 MGM that puffed a bit of blue smoke after looong red lights (guide seals). Went to Penzoil Hi-mileage oil. Cured the smoking and used a quart about 2500 miles. Changed oil and filter @4000. Put 145K on it this way successfully. Sold it 2 years back to a friend - kept track of it. It is still doing the same - no smoke.

Want to know where the oil is going, check your spark plugs.

Think so? I just changed them about 5k ago because I am running one step cooler with the tune. What would the culprit be if this were the case?

Most of the possibilities were already listed. With the plugs being fairly new it actually works out even better. Engines can burn oil slowly over time with no sign of smoke or other problems. The only evidence you have is buildup on plugs, valves, and the exhaust.

The Isuzu 3.5 V6 from 98-2000 had a severe oil consumption problem due to a factory design flaw with the pistons. The oil was not draining back fast enough from the rings and being forced through to the combustion chamber and burned. Most owners never reported smoke or other issues aside from plugs fouling sooner and excessive carbon buildup over time.

I will take a look at one of the plugs, thanks!

When my valve stem seals went, I don't believe I saw any evidence on the plugs. Without doing a leakdown test, the only evidence I could see of valve stem seals was an occasional puff of blue smoke. If you don't even see the blue smoke, don't be surprised if you don't see any evidence on your plugs.

^ This is true. I was just offering a suggestions. Spark plugs are always a great place to check to see how your engine is doing. 1qt/1000mi is generally with in acceptable consumption limits for most OE manufacturers anyway.
