never done that before I turned it on briefly yesterday to lubricate the unit and it immediately made noise I saw the serp belt had a wobble but doesnot wobble withthe AC off why would it matter since the belt turns/attaches the ac regardless is it the compressor running that causes the wobble? how? it's ok when the ac is off but the flywheel still truns all the time.. I'm at a loss on this
almost appears that it could slip off the tensioner which is where the wobble is evident

Could be a sign of 2 things, 1) the AC compressor is putting up too much resistance, 2) the spring in the tensioner is getting weak.
If thats the original tensioner, I'd suspect that.
The AC compressor has a magnetic clutch in the pulley, so the pulley always spins w/ the engine running. Its just freewheeling unless the AC is on, which engages the clutch and turning the compressor internals. This is why there is little to no benefit in deleting the AC for performance, just weight savings.

I know as a preventative maintenance rule you should replace the belt and tensioner together but at what mileage should this be done?

it does indeed seem a though it's the resistance when it is turned on and yes, the tensioner is original/high miles thanks seems like it's always something with machines but a horse never complains

True, a horse never complains, but you have to feed him and clean up all the horse sh!t. I would replace the tensioner if it the original like you say, that's more than like;y the problem.

but the belt only wobbles on the tensioner when the ac clutch is engaged fine otherwise so? wouldn't that indicate that it is just the compressor causing the belt to shift on the tensioner with each revolution?
granted..the tensioner's surface area does look really smooth or worn and shiny but it does not move up, down, in or out & it's tight...
should it be? Normal? also, the belt is only a year old glazed/hardened ones slip some ..I realize that
I just won't turn the ac on
all good for now it'll last for a few more thousand miles
thanks guys

When you turn the AC on you'll notice the tensioner move a little bit. When you turn it on it adds load to the belt/engine. If the belt is wobbling on the tensioner, I'd say the pully on the tensioner is going bad. You can replace just the pully, I believe, but you'd be better off replacing the whole thing.

I want to get to the bottom of this so I'm going to take a video of mine moving. I know it moves over a half inch constantly. I don't know if the AC was on when I saw that problem. I just won't turn the ac on
all good for now it'll last for a few more thousand miles
thanks guys
Don't use the defrost either if this is your plan.
