I am the one that made the heat core guide, so it was posted here at 10/08'

I can't remember the miles but it probably did not exceed 30k.

It let loose, and is leaking coolant out the evap drain and into the interior. I replaced the hoses to make sure.

What would cause this repeat type of failure? I used new green coolant, and also a genuine new ford core. I also was OCD about the whole job so nothing is rubbing or causing a puncture.

Could my 400 watt power inverter be feeding some kind of electrolysis into the cooling system? Any ideas? nono

Is it possible that you might have accidentally scratched or otherwise nicked the core when you replaced it?

I feel sorry for you, having to do that job over again... I replaced the heater core on my '84 Mustang, and it was a lot of damn work; but since it's a convertible, at least I could stand up so I had more room to work.

Good luck!

That is what I made sure not to do.

I even put fresh new foam in place of the flattened rotted old foam so it could not rub the plastic box.

A careful inspection should yield the answer to the reason for fail.....post back when you can make a determination.

With the car running, place the positive end of a voltmeter probe into the coolant and the negative end on the negative battery terminal. If you've got more than 0.3V you have your problem. If the voltage is in excess of 0.3V, you have electrolysis eating away at the aluminum of your heater core.

Help me understand where the voltage difference would be coming from?
The conductive coolant would be well grounded already, as it is touching the engine block and that is well grounded..potentially, the coolant would be the pre-existing ground path on the heater core as well...

Run a ground lead from the heater core to a chassis point.

So how did you fix your 94? What was causing your electrolysis?

Fordiesel69,

What coolant did you use. Did you know of the coolant info I outline in the thread referenced in my sig? That could be part of your problem right there. Peak/Prestone are not good coolants and I would never use them.

It was Texaco regular green, changed out when I did the first core. I am thinking I may want to go with G-05 after this to help out on the corrosion.

Took some readings today on various vehicles: + lead in coolant bottle, black on - battery terminal. Meter set to auto range DC volts.

96' Town Car (151k Unknown Green Coolant - Looks good)
Cold
-0.187 Off
-0.283 Running

Warm
-0.250 Off
-0.252 Running

------------------------------------------------------
91' Town Car (81k Miles - New coolant)
Warm Only
-0.092 Off
-0.111 Running

------------------------------------------------------
91' Town Car (116k Miles - Coolant changed at 94k Green)
Cold
-0.159 Off
-0.204 Running

------------------------------------------------------
02' Dodge Caravan 3.3L V6 (21k Miles - Factory Green from 02)
Cold
+0.373 Off
+0.351 Running

Not sure why the 4.6L engine all read - voltages when the 3.3L engine read + voltages. Anyways are any of these bad??????
