I haven't done it on one of these but the 2003 Ford Service CD says to remove the transmission and flexplate then the oil slinger and the seal.

I did mine when my transmission died. My mom-in-laws '97 TC with 110K has a damp oilpan so I know her rear seal is going bad.

I got the whole Rotunda rear main install seal kit off Ebay and it works perfect. But I have read you can buy rear seals that come with a plastic ring to press the seal in. My seal was just a seal in a box with no ring.

There is a steel carrier that bolts to the rear of the block that the seal presses into. Problem is the installed seal isn't flush with the carrier, it is pressed in just below the flat surface of the carrier.

Ford Manual says there is an oil slinger but I didn't have one so I only put the one main seal back on.

Wow, I didn't realize I'd need all those tools. I think I'll leave it to my mechanic. I'll have to wait till my tax rtrn or save. I had this done around when I bought my car. 100k est. miles later fail? It's dripping pretty good on our driveway. Sigh.
