Those are great cars. My friend that is the owner of the local FLM dealership has a 1978 town car with 60k on it. I drove it back from Kansas City after he had a new vinyl roof put on. First thing I noticed was the 80 mph speedometer & the large steering wheel & the way it steered. He takes it out occasionally to drive it. He had it on the lot for a while but no one would make him a reasonable offer. It was a trade a few years ago for a new LTC fro a gentleman that bought it new.

Very happy with the MKS. Finally got used to all the bells & whistles. Better handling, good MPG (25-27 highway) Better stopping distance & much faster acceleration.

Made some new pics the other day.

Only thing I want to add are the cornering lights and perhaps short skirts, to change the look now and then. I do like the big skirts

The insurance guy is coming over this Thurday to estimate the current value of her. Curious what the worth will be.

Wow, these are some really nice cars. Me and my brother both thought about buying one about 10 years ago. We had seen a few in great condition pop up on autotrader back then for about $3,000. Can only imagine how hard they are to find now.

That reminds me, I saw one about maybe 6 months ago driving on 580 at night. I can't remember if I pointed it out to my brother or if he was the first to notice.

I love the Lincolns and Mercs, guys.
I still see a bunch of these old Lincolns around my area. I have one sitting at my towlot. Took it for a spin, thing floats over every bump. Skinny steering wheel that you can turn with your pinky.

I'll have to double-check on that; I could've sworn that 'half-skirts' were available on the '78s and '79s as options (or standard on such models like the '79 Collector's Series). I have a '79 edition of Ford's Car Buying Made Easier that lists all the cars, options and prices of the '79 models.

Dahsboardwise: the '79s feature more woodgrain coverage than the '78s; which featured more silver/grey appliques above the steering column. As previously mentioned, the '77s were essentially a carry-over of the older style with the tubular/thermometer-styled speedometer and full gauges. Note: very early production '77s still had the older 0-120 mph speedometers; later ones, of course had the then-federally-mandated 0-85 mph.

A year or two ago, Collectable Automobile magazine had an article (and pics) that covered the '75-'79 Continentals. A good read, especially for big Lincoln fans.

Note: a glass roof (similar to what's offered on today's Mustang) was an option for the '77 Lincoln.

Nice car BTW. cool2

Verified it overnight in both the above-publication and the fore-mentioned Collectible Automobile article (Dec. 2008 issue BTW). The '78s & '79s indeed did NOT come with fender skirts (my brother referred to them as 'wheel pants'). My bad.

Wheel pants are what they call the farings placed over the landing gear of Cessnas and similar aircraft. I guess you could apply the term to fender skirts as well, as they serve the same purpose.

Of course, on a car like a 1977 Town Car, I doubt you're gaining much in drag reduction by making your real wheelwells more aerodynamic smile
