I just went and tried to get a estimate to have my car painted. I was told 4000 to paint my CVPI. That's more than I payed for the whole car! I think the guy was being a real jerk and didn't want to paint my car. I called Earl Scheib and I was quoted 999.00 for there top of the line Diamond level paint job. Any opinions on Earl Scheib? Should I look around some more? http://www.earlscheib.com/PaintServices.aspx

A paint job is only as good as the prep work before any paint is actually applied..Would I spend $4k on a paint job for a car worth $4k or less?..No...I would either go with an Earl Scheib, Maaco type and be content with the slight orange peel look or try wet sanding and buffing the paint you already have or save the money and put it towards a later model with better condition paint already. Automotive paint is pretty expensive these days..not hard to drop $500 in paint materials before painting anything. It really boils down to what YOU want your car to look like when it is all said and done..You want a 20 foot deep paint job that looks like glass?, then you will pay to get one like that..for a daily driver, $1K to $2k seems fair pending on prep work they do versus what you do. A long time ago, I got a pick up painted for $1500 with base and clear plus some body work (no rust repair..few dents and brazed the holes shut for the old snaps to a tonneau cover <--before they had the covers with frames that clamped to the bed)

Local body shops in my area quote me roughly $1500 on average. I've seen work done by them and looks comparable to factory. Like mdnos said. The paint is only as good as the prep work. I'd take a look around at your local body shops and see if you can contact previous customers and ask them how their paint turned out. That's what I ended up doing.

I had my 04 painted by Maaco in black and it came out great. I had a friend who worked at Maaco and he told me that it doesn't matter if you buy the $100 paint job or the top of the line. All their paints are the same and have the clear mixed in it. They make you think they are different but they aren't. However what's key is the prep work. My only complaint with the Maaco paint was that it wasy to soft and easy to scuff.
I'm having my 07 painted right now by my bodyshop all black. He has painted 2 cars for me already and his work is great. If you wanted to bring it to AZ let me know and I can connect you with him.

When you have a few pieces to paint it's a lot cheaper to just pain the entire car.

I got a quotes last week as well. Any where from 700 - 5 grand. I about shat my pants when that dude said 5g. I will prep the car myself and get the 700 place to do it. A little newly opened paint place that seems to be putting out good stuff.

What you pay for is the prep work. A properly painted car has no exterior "seams" so to speak. That is to say that to do it correctly, all door handles, trim, front and rear windows (usually just the rubber trim suffices), basically everything must be removed from the exterior. The car's base paint should then be prepped, primed, primer sanded, etc. (don't quote me on the exact process) Then the color put on. The difference isn't often noticable from 50ft, but you will see greater durability, wear, and it will simply look better if its done right. Ask a shop what all their quoted price pays for; they give you a fairly long list if they are doing a proper job.

Do the prep work yourself and get it shot a local shop. anything over 1,000 is not worth it. I'm getting mine done for about $500.00 but I'm doing the prep and dropping it off. I'd rent the booth myself but time is not an option and I'm a bit rusty at it. I'm also going with the original color to reduce the work on the jams. I like white anyway

+1 to prepping it yourself. And if you're looking for one on the -real- cheap, go talk to the auto shop at the local community or tech. college. Most of the advance classes have guys that can paint pretty good, and will usually do the work at school for free. That leaves you having to buy paint only, which shouldn't be too bad if you go with a generic color.

It isn't impossible to paint your car yourself, you know. Heck, if you don't have a gun, there are roller jobs out there that beat Maaco any day. Paint is expensive because there's a LOT of labour involved in doing it right. My guess is when I get around to painting my car I'll be putting 40 to 60 hours into it (a little body work included in that). A pro would have it done in 15 hours, but still... that's big $$$.
