236,502 miles...........12 fresh quarts of AMSOil synthetic transmission fluid and new Ford filter element.....a car that shuddered moderately is now shudder free!

Of course, I have only tested the car up steep hills and WOT for 20 miles, I cannot believe it!

Anyone else have AMSOil stories relating to transmissions?

I hope it doesn't come back buddy. When my tranny was serviced I'm not sure what they put in there but the shudder was completely GONE for about a week and a half. Came back. But definitely not as bad. Hopefully yours stays away. Keep us posted!

If the Amsoil took care of the shudder, it almost certainly was only shuddering due to excessively old fluid and wont come back

The only permanent fix for shudder is to replace the torque converter.

Otherwise everything else is a band-aid fix. The Amsoil ATF for your situation might just be a thicker and more durable band-aid.

How many torque convertors will it take for one to last over 60,000 miles?

The thing is if you're PCM isn't programmed to reduce/eliminate torque converter slippage in 3rd gear, you're always going to shudder eventually even if you get a new torque converter.

I remember a TSB stating that the final solution is a new torque converter.

Any and all ATF/liquids you dump into a tranny to "solve" the shudder issue is just a band-aid solution.

Now if you started from scratch and used Amsoil ATF or Redline D4 ATF in conjunction with a beefy ATF cooler and the stock PCM tranny programming (I believe all new Fords won't shudder anymore cause of the revised programming - Jerry's chips addressed this issue back in the day BTW) your chances of shuddering are almost nil

The torque convertor was replaced and transmission rebuilt at 173,000 miles.

Shuddering started at 165,000. I should be good until 320,000 miles!

Wow, 173k miles is pretty damn good for a tranny ('specially a Ford tranny ). Maybe there's hope for my '95 to last as long...

wow

How often was the fluid changed in that transmission? What did you use?

Why did you say the Amsoil ATF cured the shudder when you just got a new torque converter in there?

When I first got the car, I ran the recommended Ford Mercon fluid, every 20,000 miles.

Ran into shuddering at 165,000.....changed with Mercon V twice in 3,000 miles.....no change.

Since the new transmission, I service it every 20,000 miles. I let the last service go until 37,000.....but it shuddered since the last service.

AMSOil.....the only thing that my transmissions will ever see again!

I'm reviving this topic because of the similar problem I'm having.

My plans are, to replace the torque converter, use Amsoil ATF, replace the filter, and maybe check the tranny cooler for the usual wear and tear. Does this sound like the thing to do, other than buying a new tranny complete?

My 93 CV-PI has 210K miles, on the body anyway (frame, etc), supposedly the engine was replaced and has 90-something K miles on it... this leads me to believe the tranny has 210K miles on it as well. The guy I bought it from couldn't answer ALL my questions about it, so, my next crusade is, since I found out I know the guy, this guy bought it from... I'm going to see him for more details.

Anwyay, any tips on my tranny plans would be appreciated.

I'm still a firm believer in changing the accumulators. I changed my 1-2 and that fixed it. Now I need to change my other accumulator.

I've got close to 220k on an original AOD, and probably 200K on the TC(was having problems when it was new, according to my dad)
