Ive watched a ton of videos on how to properly do it on a 3V engine and how to remove the RH valve cover the wrong way a million times… ok;
Car: 2001 CVPI 4.6L 2V 217,000+ miles complaint: passenger side timing chain slap noise
I have driver side valve cover off and still need to remove passenger side valve cover, harmonic balance, power steering, and timing cover..
My questions: 1). can I use the special cam holding tool in place of removing followers from the valve spring? 2). TDC marked on the balancer… refers to TDC of cylinder #1 correct? Haynes manual says to use gauge but then says use TDC and notch alignment. 3). which OTC tool is recommended for cam holding? OTC 6009 & 6020? 4). Haynes says to be careful of valve keepers, this scares the begeezus out of me. how to you remove followers without dropping these? any tips? 5). How do i know if my chains need replaced as well? aside from the 217,000 miles? lol 6). Can i just use a large screwdriver to remove followers instead of special $94 iron lego man looking device? 7). do i need the crank tool?
I tried to do this off of the existing posts and questions over the years but I can't find anything on the use of special cam holding tools vs the use of removing the followers.
one last thing, I've peeked into the passenger side valve cover and the chain has lots of slack, I haven't been able to peer all the way in to see what damage is done but my fear is this thing has jumped time already and if I wuss out and only do guides, tensioners, & tensioner arms then ill put tension on an out of time engine. I've manage to stick a inspection camera close and it looks like its dug into the first inch or so of the guide. I know you must think i'm mechanically challenged but honestly I've just watched too many videos and too many posts.

I left my valve covers on and used zip ties to hold the chains once I had the front cover off. I did that last November and my car has been good since. The chain on the drivers side had eaten all the way past the arm into the tensioner. I replaced the two arms and tensioners and put it all back together. Not exactly a textbook repair but it got the job done.
I am sure someone on here can help you do it the right way like you are trying to do tho. Good luck

Just a FYI...since you're removing the front cover from the motor, to get access to the timing chains, its a good time to think about replacing the water pump. You're over 200K miles, they're quite cheap, it's only 4 bolts, and will be easily accessible with everything else gone from the front of the motor.
