A few days ago I had a mandatory emmissions inspections on my '99CV at the local state (Colorado) run emissions station. Part of the inspection involves removing the gas cap and attaching a device to the gas cap which determines if the gas cap leaks. The vehicle passed the inspection OK, and I paid my $24.25 and drove off. I drove the vehicle for four days without a "Check Engine" light, but today the "Check Engine" light illuminated. I bought an Innova Model 3100 Code Reader (very nice device) and retrieved the code (P0455). I then did a search on this forum for code "P0455". The search retrieved four posts, one posted by PatFromJersey on 10/24/02 with the subject "Check Engine Light = Loose Gas Cap". I went out to the garage and looked at the gas cap. Guess what? The knucklehead who checked my gas cap during the emissions inspection forgot to tighten the gas cap.

Well, I always wanted a good code reader anyway. The search engine on this web site works great. Thanks!!!

The idea is to reduce evaporative emissions. So, it will notice if there are any leaks, including when the gas cap is loose.

Ironic that a test to check for leaks from the gas cap left a leak after passing the car.

Not so ironic, considering how much they pay those 'assistant' boys whose only job is to remove and reinstall your gas cap while you are in line for the inspection. It's almost certainly a minimum wage job. I saw the guy in operation, and even though he told me not to step out of the car, I removed the gas cap from the tether and handed it to him, because I was sure that he would tear it off or break the key (it's one with a lock). And I did not wait for the CEL after the inspection either - pulled off into the first gas station along the way and checked - sure enough it was loose. Here they charge $15 for the emissions inspection, and it has to pay the rent, maintaining the equipment, and doing all the paperwork. And you get a free re-inspection if you failed the first time.

P0455 is defined as a Gross leak in the Evaporative Emssions System, caused by a faulty Gas Cap Seal, otherwise you need to check for damaged vac lines, usually when I see a P0455, the culprit in most Ford Vehicles, if not a Gas Cap, is a Evap Purge SOlenoid....

when i worked one job, i put gas in the car somewhere during the first week of every month...if it needed it or not. that 10 miles/week really didn't rack up much on the odometer, but i sure used an enormous amount of fuel for such short distances.

10 miles/week??

Let's see: divided by 5 days, that equals about 1 mile per direction. You don't have a bicycle?
