Some knucklehead before I got my 2008 tried to take the right front shock off by grinding off the bolt and nut. I have tried beating whats left of the bolt out but it will not budge. I am about to the point of buying another shock and replacing the lower control arm.

Not sure if a torch will do any good. Both the bolt head and nut have been ground off flush already. Ultimately I would like to get the center shaft of the bolt out and save the shock and the control arm. The shocks look like they were just replaced before the transmission on the car went out. Not really sure why the bolt shaft will not come out,but it will not budge.

It's probably seized in the metal sleeve at the bottom on the shock, this happens with the rear control arms too.

That's what I was thinking. I have beat on it with a chisel and hammer and it will do nothing. The car was briefly in the hands of a guy before I got it. He had a grand marquis and I think he probably tried to get the shocks off for his GM. After he could not get that one off I think he gave up.

You can burn the ends of the bolt enough to get the shock out without ruining the control arm. Whether you can save the shock is another question.

Torch and air hammer. At least that's what I used for the control arms after cursing at it didn't work.

Guess a torch it is. I am not used to dealing with these northern cars. After I changed the transmission I developed a new found respect for all you mechanics in the northern states. Never realized how good us southern guys have it.

couldn't you cut between shock and control arm?on the two sides with a sawza, then pull it out and hammer them out.

That is how we got the leaf spring shackles off my Dad's E150. That was the only time I had to resort to destructive tools on a chassis part, usually the fasteners are large enough you can brute-force them out. I don't know if there's enough room to do that on these control arms.

I will check in the morning and see if that is possible.

I wonder if a balljoint press and a special home made tip to pass through the hole as the bolt remains are forced out would work?

My Arizona friends are appalled at what us rust belt wrenches have to deal with. I was in heaven down there for a winter helping build my friends jeep, not a speck of rust anywhere on a 96 Grand Cherokee. Up here the thing would look like brown swiss cheese.
