With supplies and stuff, that'd probably be in the neighborhood of $500 for installation.
Which, really... isn't that terrible.

Thanks everyone for the help ! Looks like I might just do the gears first, and get the new TC done at a later date.

Does the spline count on a torque converter make a difference?

All I'm seeing for 4R70W torque converters are 31 spline but If I'm not wrong my car is a 28 spline.

I'm also seeing that some of the TC's are listed at 12.75 inch diameter with a 11.5 inch bolt pattern.

Does a P71 have a 11.25 inch "diameter" or 11.25 inch "bolt pattern" torque converter?

What converter are you looking at? as far as I know the spline count on all 4R70W,75W,75E is the same. The "12.75" and "11.25" is referring to the diameter of the converter.

Here's one I was looking at:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4R70W-Torque-Converter-Ford-F150-AODE-4R75-2200-2600-HIGH-STALL-94-10/201865239181?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D43252%26meid%3D10cdada2ddf34a58a39dc8f20959353f%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D131473539921

The reason the spline count caught my attention is because I remember when I was shopping for my traction locker and gears there were options for 31 & 28 spline setups. Mine is 28 spline. Obviously, I have no clue whether or not this has anything to do with the spline count on the TC.

Thanks

The different spline count (28 vs 31) has to do with the rear axles, and has nothing to do with the splines on the torque converter.

The bolt pattern is referring to the spacing for the bolts that go in the flywheel. My flywheel had holes for both sizes.

I don't think that stall is high enough to be worth the swap. It would be a shame to get another one in there (especially if you're paying to have it installed) and find out that it was the same.

I'm Quoting Black_Sunshine here but am directing this toward the Original Poster of this thread. I agree, You need to get up past 3000 rpm IMO. But more importantly you want something of a smaller diameter than even the 11.25. The smaller the diameter, the quicker it'll rev. I've had a stock ford 11.25" 2400 stall(Police interceptor), a 9.5" street Edge 3200-3400 stall, a 9.75" circle d multi disc 2800 stall(Missed it's mark the first time somehow) and currently a 9.75 circle d multi disc 3600-3700 stall. I've also had my Transmission out 3 times and I will tell you it would definitely not be worth all the work for the extremely small amount you would gain with the converter the OP is considering. Of course this is just my opinion, but again I'v tried most everything in between...

Noting that you clearly wanted a higher stall, how was the 9.75" / 2800 with your gears/cams? I like mine a bit tight and that specific converter is on my radar.

Well I had 3.73 then and was swapping out my Edge 3400 after it failed on me. So in this circumstance I upgrades to a circle d and requested the same stall speed I had in the edge. For whatever reason it didn't stall high enough the first time so out it came and was sent back for a one time free re-stall. With all that said, I did drive on the 2800 stall for a few weeks. I could definitely appreciate it. at cruising speed the car pulled nicely when stabbing the throttle and unlocking the tcc. If you know what a stock 11.25" 2400 stall feels like, no matter whether you like it or don't, a 9.75" 2800 from circle d would be a very nice and noticeable improvement over it.

Yes, our mods are similar. You have headers and more aggressive gears. Those the big differences in our setups.

I'm running a 10" 3200-3400 from Roadrunner. I had trouble with it about 2k miles in. It started whining so I pulled it back out and took it back. I chose them because they were the cheapest. I mitigated the risk by swapping it myself and they are local to me. I ended having to pull it out and wait a week for them to rebuild it. They said there was junk in the bearings. Slapped it back together and same. frown Took it out and had them go through it again. Once again they said there was junk in the bearings. I put an oil filter in-line after my coolers. Put it back together and no trouble since. Took the filter out after about 3k miles because I couldn't get it to stop leaking.

At this point I've banged around with this converter for 40k miles. Cams/stall/gears really make it completely different car.
