I currently have an 07 p71 rearend under a 53 F-100 (a friend said an 03 fit nicely under his 56🤔). It's too wide but I had no choice but to install it once I got the old one out. My truck was on a friends rack and it couldn't stay. I've traded for another p71 rearend. I think it's a 98 and was hoping if I list the rearend plate info then someone could help verify. Top line is SN 019C. The second line is L55 88 8K23. I know it's an 8.8 posi 3.55. I need help with the year. I've been told that the late 90s rearends are narrower and more like to fit than the 03 on up. If someone could help clear this up, I would really appreciate it.

Its probably a 1999 differential since the date code is November 23, 1998. It is also a 3.55 axle with limited slip.

If you are using the Panther suspension layout, then the 2 differentials are a direct swap for each other except for the location of the rear shock mounts. The '98-'02 differential is narrower than the '03-'11 diff, '98-02 used shocks mounted inboard of the frame rails as where '03+ were outboard. The rest of the suspension mounting points are the same. '03+ axles have slightly better rear brakes, but if its important enough to pull the backing plates and swap them is your call. I'd be inclined to keep the slightly smaller and non-vented brakes of the older axle since they are likely sufficient unless you are road racing the thing.

I've been reading almost non stop since I initially posted. I guess it boils down to this question which I think I already know the answer to. If the 07 is about 2 inches per side too wide then will the 98/99 also be too wide or does it track narrower. I'm no mechanic but am fortunate to have a good friend that is. I'm learning as I go. It's a pretty steep bell curve. Thanks for the quick response

They changed the axles in 03. The 98/99 are narrower (I'm not positive exactly how much).

According to the parts catalogs, the axle shaft for a '99 is 32.25" long and a '07 is 34.4" long, so, about 2" longer per side for a '07 vs '99 differential.
