Recently bought an '04 CV LX Sport.

First question: What tranny fluid comes in this car (I am guessing by reading the posts that it is NOT Mercon V?)

Second question: I've read Mercon V is the best way to go for prevention/cure of the "tranny shakes." At what mileage intervals is it best to do a tranny flush and have Mercon V put in? Ford garages typically carry it? Car has 3,000 miles.....

Many thanks guys - this site is an absolute godsend for CV's!

Mercon V does not stop tranny shudder. When the trans shifts into direct drive the converter locks up. It does this right after 40 mph. If I have my foot in it I will get the shudder.

Thanks for the quick replies - been reading the posts and note, just as you stated, that the TC is usually the culprit. But, many others had been raving about the fluid, so thought I'd ask. Yeah, didn't bother checking the manual on that one (my bad)......just posted instead to see if any additional advice may come through. Thanks again-

It is Mercon V ( as previously mentioned by others and on the dipstick and in the owner's manual ).

Depending on your driving style, count on changing it at 25K-30K. Recommended normal duty service interval is 30K and severe service is 15K.

*You'll know ... you'll feel like the vehicle is going over a series of speed bumps just after it shifts.

That '04 sounds sweeeeeeeet! The Mercon V works small wonders. I was told the later model Vics ALL came with a transmission cooler. I'd be interested in knowing, if the model on the LX and the P/I are the same, and the rating. I slapped a cooler rated for a mobile home on mine. In winter, after all day driving, it's still just warm to the touch.

HEY CDBCV: That car begs for a full sythetic motor oil. It's just a no brainer! All are NOT the same, even if they say they are 100% synthetic. Just make it easy... Walmart has Mobil 1 5-30 in 5qt. jugs. It's great stuff. The Ford filter is the 820. It's fine. FYI-the Walmart brand filter may even be better, and it's dirt cheap.

Welcome to the forum....

Ulver, thanks for the heads-up. I'd read a few of your other posts about the importance of a good grade synthetic and will definitely follow. I know many people who use Mobil 1 and swear by it. The F-Body GM's (Camaro, TA's, etc.) were all pre-loaded with it from the factory and had good luck. Good advice on the WalMart filters as well.
Glad to be on the site!

That's basically wrong, technically correct, but functionally wrong.

Mercon V fluid will "fix" shudder if the pump can supply enough pressure, if the TCC sol works properly, if the TC clutches are not already toast from improper maintence/operation or incorrect fluid. It will take some miles for this to happen, typically a tank of fuel or two or three. Results are not sudden.

The second most common cause of "shudder" has nothing at all to do with the trans or TC, but bad a bad sparkplug wire or plug itself.

An '04 DOES have Mercon V from the factory.

I will argue that Amsoil Universal ATF is the best way to prevent TC shudder. And assuming you do a 99% fluid replacement (see tech article), Amsoil ATF's service interval can be up to 2-3 times as long as Mercon V. It is the only 100% synthetic ATF, and its base stock is PAO.

Yes, Ford stealerships dispense Mercon V, but don't go there unless you really want to be raked over the coals.

Why would one use a full synthetic when he could use a 100% synthetic? Mobil 1 is the former and not the latter.

The Super Tech filter has excellent SPE and MPE (single- and multi-pass efficiency), but by looking at it, I'd guess the filter's capacity is less than the Motorcraft FL-820 or others. Look in the filter, and you'll see a larger cavity than other filters. My guess is that it has less media altogether, and therefore less overall capacity.

I use the Super Tech filter for flushing engines before switching them to Amsoil. The need for SPE and MPE is high, but capacity is not important since the filter will be discarded after 20 minutes of use.

[edit] I wonder if Walmart bought the Hard Driver design from Peak Performance Products. Hard Driver filters were made of heavy gauge steel screen pleated synthetic filter media. They have not been made for some time, but I would be interested to see when Walmart began selling their synthetic fiber Super Tech filter. The specs on the filter box look exactly the same. But they're $6 less than Peak was selling them for. [/edit]

Hello.
My GM gets ATF oil from Ford.
I don't know if it is Full synthetic.
Car is now 9 years old with the original tranny.
Is it useful for me to change it to ATF oil Synthetic from AMSoil?
Thanks for answering.

Yes and no.

If the ATF you are getting in your trans is Ford's Mercon V oil, then there is not a huge difference for you. But, if like many other dealers, yours is either not aware or ignorant of the Mercon V "requirement" for your trans., then yes Amsoil would be a real improvement.

Redline D4 ATF is the other fully synthetic ATF that meets/exceeds Ford's Mercon-V spec.

Squeek,

I don't mean to be too much of a jerk here but these statements are not entirely correct.

Metroplex already posted that Redline makes a "full synthetic" ATF That meets Mercon V specs. There may be others.

Amsoil engine oil is arguably a superior product to most but it is not technically 100% synthetic. It's additive packages have "carrier oils" which are dino based so technically the final product is not 100% synthetic. I know it is a technicality but there are some people (the makers of Synlube for example) who are very sensitive about such things.

I thing what Ulver was referring to when he said "full synthetic" was a PAO based product which Amsoil, Mobil-1, and Royal Purple are.
