I have had my 1998 cvpi for about a month now and I have noticed a loud creaking noise when the wheel is turned all the way over. It happens especially when backing out of the driveway to the right. I'm thinkin it may be a ball joint, any suggestions?

i just went through this with my 97
have a look at the front end parts, follow the prescribed methods for checking your tie rods and ball joints.
jacking the car up and "prying" under the wheel with a bar to test ball joints, etc..
i went through a few things before i realised most were worn pretty evenly so i replaced everything except control arm bushings.
mine werent sqeaking though, only on severe bumps, my noise was and is control arm bushings.

With the wheels turned all the way, it's the steering bump stops. Put a blob of grease on each one. To see them w/o pulling off the wheels turn the wheel all the way to the left and look behind the right tire and vice-versa for the left side.

mine did this and had a body mount fail under the drivers side near your feet somewhere.

Its probably just the steering stops. Like Colin Said!!!! I used to go bouncing through a field behind my house with wheels cranked over and there was a horrible sound. Greased up the steering stops...quiet as can be. Try that first...a couple blobs of grease is pretty cheap compared to ball joints and bushings.

^^^ what Colin Said^^^^ if it a full lock and it creaks then it's the wheel stop, put grease on it and no more, Imine just started to do it again been over 5 months since I last grease it.

can someone with a digital camera take a picture for me of the stops and have an arrow pointing to it? Mine does this too.

I had trouble finding mine too. Their is a little rounded off piece of metal that protudes off the brake caliper. What I did was put the car up on ramps ur something, crank the wheel all the way over, and look for metal-to-metal contact. I wish I had a digital camera...would be a lot easier to explain. Its rubbing surface is a little metal square welded to the rear section of the lower control arm.

The wheel stops are easy to get to. With the steering at full lock look where the caliper touches the lower arm. Thats where the grease goes! Make this part of your oil change to-do list.

Here's a pic of the steering bump stop on my left tire. It's the shiny thing slightly to the left of the coil spring. Put a blob of grease on it. I need to do mine.

Got a digital camera from my mom. I forgot to change its settings so the pic would be smaller.
