I have the worst luck with windshield wipers.

Seems every vehicle I get always has problems with the wipers "chattering" when used.

Yea, I've replace the blades and still get the damn chattering.

So what's the secret to STOP the annoying windshield wiper chatter ???

Check the alignment of the arms and how its applying pressure to the wiper blades. If it's applying a lot of pressure to one side, it will cause chatter.

It would also help if you clean the windshield glass surface with Windex or something, then apply the old fashioned Rain-X stuff.

I would recommend silicone wiper blades. I've been using them for 2+ years (same pair) and they work great in the winter: they can't freeze!

I tned to agree with Metro on this one. If it happens on every car yuo have it might be as simple as the type of soap you use to wash the car.....Clean the windshield well and apply some Rain-X. You won't need the wipers as much and they will run pretty smooth (for a while).

Good Luck

Carnauba wax (from a car wash) will also tend to increase friction causing the chatter.

I had the same problem with the drivers side wiper! I found it was not perpendicular to the winshield! so I took the blade off, stuck a screwdriver in the 'hook' of the wiper arm and twisted it until the wiper was perpendicular to the winshield. Works great now!!

Just be carefull not to twist it too much!!

Also cleaning your wiper blades can help prevent this. Take some high-quality glass cleaner on a paper towel, and GENTLY run it from one end of the blade to the other. Do this several times until there isn't as much black stuff coming off on the towel. If you do this every few weeks, it can help prolong the life of your blades. running your wipers while going through a touchless car wash can also get them a little cleaner, but of course not as clean as doing it by hand. Some places also sell little wet-nap style cleaning wipes for blades that will help restore the blades.

I replace mine every six months as many manufacturers recommend, and clean them regularly and they don't give me much trouble. Oh, and getting quality blades to start with helps too.

My blades usually work well at city speeds, but they cahtter up at freeway speeds. I've often thought about installing a mini-spoiler onto the wiper arm to keep the blade close to the windshield at freeway speeds. Any thoughts on this?

If you're using rubber wiper blades, good luck. I've never had any good experiences with rubber based blades.

The silicone stuff is much better. It remains soft and flexible in the winter, doesn't absorb water so it doesn't freeze up, and lasted the longest out of all the blades I've tried.

For those in the salt belt, make sure you have plenty of de-icer fluid in the trunk and in your reservoir.

I've found Rain-X is the cause of wiper chatter myself. If there isn't enough water on the windshield.. *skurrrt* they chatter.

I've never had a problem with Rain-X.
I also use Rain-X wiper fluid....

I would definitely check the wiper arms like Allen Matty said.

I second that. Last week I went through half a gallon in a 24 hour period.

Foogettabboutitt!

CV's don't have a good wiper system! Tried all of the different blades, even the "Winter" version. Nothing works.

And don't you just hate rolling down the driver's window in a blizzard-type snowfall to clear all the snow off when the wipers start to pack too much snow over on the left side of your viewing area!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm having a bad day. Trying to avoid doing the front brakes on the '93

My drivers side wiper blade was horrible when I bought the car. I must have bought 4 sets of wipers before I realized the arm had somehow twisted and the blade was sitting at a slight angle. It works fine now that it's level with the windshield.

Freeway speed! I have the same problem. I practically does not wipe at the speed over 55. Does the "mini-spoiler" help?
