I just purchased a 2002 P-71. After the first fill up, the Check Fuel Cap light came on. The next day, the Check Engine light came on. I took it to AutoZone and they told me the codes were 455 and 457. They told me to replace the gas cap (which I did) but the lights did not go out. I was told that I would have to drive the car approximately 200 miles before the lights would go out. Is this true or are they just giving me a line of BS?

did you turn the key off/shut off engine when you fill up? You should!!! some car are more sensitive then other. one of the PI at work is a 02 and if you don't shut the engine off prior to gassing up the CEL will come on.

Yes it will take iirc 3 full driving cylces for the codes to go away if it was infact the fuel cap.

Alternatively you can disconnect your battery for ~15 mins and all the codes will be cleared

Isn't it against the law to fill up without shutting off the engine? There's warning signs all over the place at gas stations here.

/fill up without shutting car off = boom

hmm... I guess my car is weird then. When I first got my 2001 CV used in 2003 the check engine light was on and the dealer told me it was because the gas cap was bad and needed to be replaced. Yet I can leave the engine running when I fuel up and it doesn't trigger the cheeck engine light.

Can't speak for the analogue dash, but on my GMQ's digital dash there's a CHECK FUEL CAP light between the bar graphs for temp and fuel. Luckily I haven't seen it lit up yet Check engine is right above/below (can't remember) my TRAC OFF light, to left of speedo.

The Check Fuel Cap light is beside (to the right and slightly higher) the Check Engine light.

Thanks everyone for your advice. After driving the car for 250 miiles the lights still would not go out. Tried the battery disconnect and it worked fine.

Maybe one of you experts can help me. Got a 03 CVPI. 105K miles, runs great... but the stinkin' check engine light will not stay off. Had two different mechanics do smoke tests, told me it was fixed....two days later the light is back on. NOW the Check Fuel Cap light comes on -- but very strange -- I clear the codes with a scanner when I fill up, but every time the fuel guage reads 1/4 down the Check Fuel Cap light comes back on. If I clear the codes, the light stays off until I fill up again, and the light stays off until the fuel gauge reads 1/4 down again. Every time. Have changed gas caps twice. No effect. Do I have a gas tank problem here? Is it possibly the float thingie that monitors how much gas is in the tank? Run out of ideas, and patience. HELP !!
