Hey, sorry to bump this, but does anyone have a better picture or understanding of where those "other" exhaust resonators go? The normal ones (the big cyl ones with the bracket that attaches between the H-pipe and cat-back) is pretty common, but that other one (in the picture above, it's laying underneath / perpendicular to it), I could not find on ANY Panther in the Junkyard and there were ~20 maybe of varying years from 1994-2008. I did see on one car (forget which year, maybe a newer Grand Marquis) that it had smaller cans welded to the side of the mufflers, but definitely didn't look like those.

I've seen it before but can't remember where....it's held on by the bolds on the clamp at the front of the muffler. you put the two pieces of the clamp on the pipe and then put the damper on the U-bolt before putting the nuts on. it sticks straight out to the side like the ones do at the CAT/H-Pipe connection.

Ahhh... ok, that makes perfect sense. So it basically bolts onto the back of the exhaust clamps. I'm willing to bet those are like the first things to go... especially because when people put on new mufflers or a sportier exhaust, those just get tossed by the exhaust shops... frown that would make sense as to why I didn't see any of them. It was weird though, because there was ONE car which had something like that basically welded onto the side of the mufflers.

I searched around and there is nearly zero info on that damper. the best I found was a graphic of it on tasca listed for an 03 grand marquis, but it wasn't available to buy and it didn't list a part number.

see part 16

So i got under the 03 today thinking that maybe i had seen that damper on the muffler.....but...no damper...and no F'n clamp either! Wtf how does a clamp just rot off and go bye bye?!?! Been wondering why my car has a random exhaust growl. Its not constant and usually only happens when its raining hard and i hit the gas to pass on the highway.

I've always tossed those dampers on numerous cars without any bad effects that I have noticed. The quiet freak engineers add them in if they can't engineer a perfectly quiet system without adding weight.

I'd like to see pics of that, my mechanic told me the left one would not bolt up to the cat/pipe joint because it was hitting something, which makes sense since all the diagrams I've seen call for one on the right, then on the left it's at the muffler clamp, even on Ford's website.

Prior to 03 or 04, all dual exhaust used the single exhaust layout in the 1st pic, and they changed it due to the redesign.

Here is my 07's Exhaust pictures:

Both my 01 and 03 have a damper on both cats....both are single exhaust.

My 07 single exhaust is like the first pic. I never noticed before where they are on the cvpi. I'll have to look sometime.

Damn, when I got my 2-1/4" catback installed the shop tech removed those dampers. He told me they were counter-balance weights for only single exhaust cars. Damn it! I do have a slight drone that I'm sure those damper weights would have absorbed.

I'll bet they would at that! I know that when I went to duals using factory system for same car and left them off I got noise and adding them back killed the drone like vibration.

Sorry to respond to an old thread, but all three of my 2003 TCs do not have these large exhaust dampeners.

On the H pipe however, a little back from the join with the cats, there are some itty-bitty ones. They are welded to the H pipe.

And looking under a couple of 04s - one was an L car and the other was a standard, they had the same setup as my 2003.

So these larger dampeners on 2003+ are for CV and GM only.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the part numbers of the TC exhaust in that year range are completely different, resulting in different resonances, and therefore the need of different damping.

The purpose of the dampers is to keep the pipes from resonating like organ pipes at particular engine RPMs. If the plumbing is different shaped, you can move the resonant point out of the operating range of the engine and do away with the dampers. A little quality time with a computer acoustics design program could have made the need for dampers go away entirely if Ford bothered to redesign things. If production cost was higher for the TC exhaust, or there was an existing supply of parts to use up, Ford would have elected to keep using the old design on the CVs and GMs.and would have kept the new/fancy design for the TC only.
