Hey all,
As I said possible new buy. I have a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria sport with 117,200 on the clock. I am thinking about selling it and buying a 2005 with 123k on the clock. Car has already been converted to coil over suspension in the rear. The car has a problem with the blend door. I can have my Mobile Mechanic fix that I’m guessing for above in between $500 and $600. To bring the car current though I would need to put new spark plugs in as well as drop the trans pan and change the filter out. The difference between my car in a 2005 is all work maintenance wise has been done. All the way from changing the spark plugs and boots to transmission pan drop with new filter. Also had the thermostat changed as the one that was in the car when I got it decided to go on hiatus. I don’t need two cars, and I’m wondering what the difference between the 2004 and 2005 are. And yes I have searched the threads and seen them.
I just wanted newer opinions from all my brothers and sisters here on the forum. For my current 2004 I say that the car is good from far and far from Good, what I mean by this is that from a distance the car looks great, but when you’re up close you can see the paint really needs to be redone, Where as the paint on The other crown Vic is a dark gray where mine is a silver birch. Just would like to know what all your opinions are. I’m wondering if the 2004 and the 2005 sport are basically the same car.

In the important ways, they are pretty much the same except you know your '04s history to some extent and it do have fewer miles.

I was under the impression that the 04 sport is the best year of the car. That’s what the reading from this forum says. Not everyone agrees. That’s ok as everyone has a favorite. But the reading they say the 04 has an 80 mm mass airflow sensor, hop suspension and I guess something else that I may be forgetting. I’m wondering if the sport that I currently have is worth keeping stock. For instance I know that my car the air compressor for the rear suspension is sounding pretty ratty. But they are suspension is holding air and I only really hear the compressor again it sounds pretty bad but it doesn’t run all that often. So I know the bags are good. Agena compressor is probably pretty cheap. But then again I don’t wanna buy the wrong compressor and have it be a piece of crap. The Arnett compressor is more expensive. And putting coil suspension in the rear and getting rid of the air system is obviously cheaper. Just wondering if the car will handle better worse who knows. Who knows better than most of the people on the site. Again you’re not wrong about knowing the history of my car versus somebody else’s car. What I do know about the other car is that the oil change was just done and he is only had the car since March of 2020. So I know that when I get it it will need spark plugs spark plug boots and definitely want to drop the trans and replace the trans filter. But again it could need a lot more.

I have an 04P71. They say the 04 is the best year. I believe it's true. I have 230k on the clock and she is showing no signs of giving up.
I'm very meticulous on maintenance and I have jmod the transmission to the max so I believe that is the key to her longevity.
It's your car so do as you wish but I would just keep her and fix what is wrong with her. As far as a paint job these are probably the cheapest cars to repaint. Call a cab company and see who they use.
Lastly my blend door went out also. A new blend door is about 40 bucks and you should be able to fix it yourself. However the space that it's located is so tight the video tutorials that I have seen say you have to break off part of it to remove it and install the new one. I did a temporary fix and manually moved the blend door with a screw driver so I have heat.
Hope this helps..

Since you asked for opinions, mine is: "Better the devil you know..."
Unless you are 100% comfortable with the provenance of the other car, you might be buying someone else's problems.

How do I know what spline I have. I know from the door sticker that my axle is a 327’s. Open diff, Is there a way to tell spline with out taking things apart. With that said nothings really wrong with my car other than the paint. And you are right about keeping the evil you know versus the evil you don’t know. Good idea I’m calling cab company to find out who they use for paint. Thanks everybody who has posted their thoughts. I really appreciate all of them. I will hold on to what I have, she has a clean bill of health.

From the ever-cromulent dRock96Marquis:
"The cutoff BUILD DATE is 12/04/2004. This date or earlier indicates a 28 spline rear axle. 12/06/2004 or later indicates a 31 spline rear axle assembly. "

I think the 2005 headlamps are unique connector, expensive as hell and won't swap directly with any other year.I installed new headlamps for a 2004 application on my '05 by swapping over the pigtail and connector from the '05 to the new 2004 headlamps to make them work for very short money.

To me the newer gauge cluser that started in 2005 is worth it alone to sell the 2004 and move onto something else. Especially if you're moving up to a car that looks nicer.
But I'd skip 2005 and look for 2006 and newer. The 2 things that keep me away from 2005 is I hate the 1 year only antenna they stuck on the rear quarter panel. It seems to be the worst year for drive by wire with everyone complaining about lag and other problems. Also I think it's been said that 2005 is the cross over year with a bunch of unique things or parts like the rear axle that some have the old style and some have the new one.

Quote of the month, Winston Churchill ‘Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty- never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.” I had an '04 (see signature) and an '05 and I agree with what has been discussed. There was a recall on a steering wheel nibble (slight shake at 70 mph that no one was able to repair) and I had the tires Roadforce balanced and cured the problem. I bought the '04 new and drove it 2 years with 0 problems. The '05 I bought 3 years ago for a family member. It has been a good car generally. The '96 MGM has 400,000 miles on it and hopefully the '05 will go the distance. Time will tell. The BDA is going to be a problem, however I have changed those out on later models and it is really no big deal to me. The MGM I have with 400,000 miles still has the original air compressor and I wouldn't be with out the RAR. JMHO. Good luck with whatever you decide. Craig.

The drive by wire would be enough to keep me away from the the '05. I find the dbw throttle response in my '09 to be vastly inferior to the mechanical throttle in my '02. I LOVE driving the '02...I "like" driving the '09.
Also, the '09 dbw has slightly misbehaved on one occasion, and I was not able to isolate the cause...so a recurrence of that is always in the back of my mind when driving it. Once had a 2006 PI where the dbw went completely haywire (at unpredictable times) and I ended up selling it because of that.

2004 - The best year of the new frame / suspension redesign.
2005- Everyone above is correct, but I thought it would be worth mentioning for whatever reason, the trannies are more prone to fail. Nobody has concluded why.
I blame it on the software on 05 but I may be wrong.

I motion for keeping the current car. Even if your air suspension fails, changing to coils is super easy and the parts are cheap - I swapped coils in my parents' driveway 2 years ago because my condo association frowns upon me working in the parking lot
