I bought a 95 crown victoria. 118,000 miles on it. it to my knowledge wasent abused to bad, it was a detective car, never was used as a regular patrol car.
My problems are that in reverse you have to give it gas and get the RPMs to about 1200 (im guessing) before it will kick into grea and start to reverse, feels liek its slips a bit, and when you back off the gas it pops out until you give it more gas.
1st gear sometimes does what reverse does, and it always seems liek it is slipping. not to bad tho.
it shifts somewhat hard into second
2nd has no problems whatever. It doesent slip and it goes when i tell it to.
at about 39 mph it tries to shift into 3rd ( i think) and it just does nothing, it just revs until i roll to about 32 mph and it kicks into second.
i have no 3 rd gear at all
Now i poured a bottle of lucas trans fix into the tranny because i wanted toi see if it will stop slipping in 1st and reverse. it atopped slipping in reverse for about 5 minutes and 1 st seemed beter for abotu 7 miles. then it went bad and started to pop out again after i start up the car and put it into gear.
Could it be linkage problem, i had a 78 LTD that wouldnt go into 3 rd a rusty linkage. i WD 40 it and it worked liek a dream
Could it be a filter? when i drive the car tho it smells liek somethign burnt only after i accelarte hard.
How much for a rebuilt tranny? where can i go to get it done? Can i fix mine?
Also check engien light also comes on, 1st time i checked it it said mass airflow senser malfunction, i cleared it then 10 miles later insuffiicient Emissions recycling . i cleared that and it popped up again, havent gone back yet and plugged the computer in again
i also think there may be a Co2 sencer or soemother serner related to that acting up too

Replace the filter and o-ring. The oring will stay up inside the hole, so make sure to pull it out before installing the new filter. The upper plastic part of the filter has been known to crack, and also the filters sometimes fall down into the pan and then you suck air instead of fluid.
Try this first and then move onto getting the elctronics checked.

It's amazing how many detective CV's there are out there
Did you check the level/condition of the fluid?
You describe slippage in both forward and reverse gears. You also say that you have no third gear - what about overdrive (4th)?
Overdrive is not a true gear, it's activated by a solenoid on the valve body that can fail.
There are also 2 shift solenoids on the valve body that control the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts that can fail.
There is a torque converter clutch solenoid on the valve body that can fail - this will not allow the converter clutch to lock/unlock.
The pump may be bad = low line line pressure which can cause all of the symptoms you described.
You also mention a burning smell - the clutch packs may all be burned. If the tranny has been overheated the clutch packs and internal piston seals may have fried. That also causes debris to be everywhere inside the tranny.
The torque converter may be bad internally as well.
Unfortunately, I doubt that a fluid/filter change will fix-r-up, but it's always worth a try. IMO the unit is toasted, but that is just from what you describe.
Somewhere to get another tranny - do a search here and get with Lonnie or Darrin for a replacment unit. Get it fixed right the first time and keep that nice car dependable.
Don't count on a nice outward appearance as a failsafe against something like this happening. I maintain my cars like a maniac, never any major troubles/breakdowns, until the torque converter decided to go poof on my 95. No warning, no nothing.

I live in Cleveland Ohio, I live about 19 minutes from lake Erie.
Well as of today it no pops in and out of first gear when i pull off and it just on my way home today started poppinjg in and out of 2nd.
It doesent make it into 4th (overdrive) i cant get past 3rd.
Nearly got into an accident today because 1st wouldnt engage. i pulled out into the intersection and it popped out and because of the snow the the oncoming car wouoldnt have been able to stop. i had to manually put it into 2nd.
Also dont knwo if this may mean anything. but i noticed that ABS doesent work ( to my knowledge) I slide to a halt, and i dont hear any ABS sound. also i dont seem to have traction control?

Sounds like you have a few problems. ABS will not have anything to do with the tranny, unless your having spedo issues even then i dont think it will have anything to do with the ABS, someone will chime in if i am wrong, please do if i am.

Youngunn--you can take off in second by putting the shifter in "2". I know it doesnt help the problem but it may prevent an accident. Sounds like the tranny is toast. You can get a good guaranteed used one and install or drive to indy(4 or 5hrs) and have Darrin rebuild it better than new.
Cleaning your EGR passage in the intake will prob. take care of the other problem.

Thanks Guys. I found that my tanny doesent slip or have any problems when its manually in 1 or 2. so ive been driving on those. How bad is it just to leave it in 2nd? or should i put it in 1st then shift it up to 2nd when i hit 10mph?
I just need the tranny to last a little while longer. i only drive locally. i never do more than 35.
I had the mechanic i workl with say it could be a shiftign control problem. does it shift by vaccum or electric. and i noticed green build up along the bottom of the car (the kind you get when u have a bad ground)
that 4 or 5 hour drive to indy will take alot longer only going 30 mph

Filter comes with o-ring
Re-use the trans pan gasket, unless it is damaged.
No compound.
Mercon V, ~15quarts (good to have extra on hand!) if you drain the t/c

i put 6 quarts of mercon V in and it was too full. it still drove like it used no chnage at all.
the old trnany fluid i am almost sure was burned up. o rgettign burned.
Guess the cars going to the tranny shop unless i figure somethign new out
