Just like the title says. 98 CV P71. From Canada, Gas engine.

Here's the situation. When the car is OFF, the highbeams are now ON, all the time, cannot turn them off. THe blue highbeam light on the dash is aslo iluminated. Same when car is running but light switch is in OFF position. Doesn't matter if parking brake is engaged or not. Same result. Now, when I switch the light switch to full ON (all the way to the right, the third position), the highbeams now turn OFF and the highbeam indicator on the dash goes out. But if I turn the switch to the parking lights or to the off position, the highbeams come on again.

What is my problem here? Or, alternatively, is there an easy way to disable the highbeam circuit altogether? I rarely use the highbeams anyhow and I'm sure it would be cheaper to just disconnect them entirely, but if it's an easy fix, I'm willing to give it a try.

Thanks.

Sounds like a bad multifunction sw. Wiggle the turn signal stalk very aggesivly (without breaking it). I think this is the most common problem.

Son of Thor (great name!),
I'd bet your CV has (or had) "Daytime Running Lights" and that's where your problem originates from. I don't have wiring schematics here to look at (we don't have DRL's on our Fords in the Lower 48) but you might check your fuse panels (under hood and under the dash by where your left knee points) If there is a fuse for this function, try pulling the fuse.... ( the problem might be a bit more tricky, like in the LCM or just a bad ground in the system)
As for the suggestion that the MultiFunction switch might be to blame, with all due respect to Fordiesel69, I just don't see how that could be.
Let us know what you ultimately find

Phord Phreak - (also a great name!)

I do indeed have DRL. I'll def. check the fuse panels, but I currently have no idea which fuses are used for the lighting system. I'm going to have to dig around my Ford CD and see what's up. Thanks for the suggestion!

The only reason I say it COULD be is because with the IGN in the OFF position and the headlights in the OFF position, you can still pull the turn signal stalk towards yourself and the high beams will illuminate as well as the dash indicator. The multifunction SW's fail in many different ways on these cars.

It is the daytime running lamp unit. It is on the rad support. Unplug it and the lights will go out. You will loose the high beam indicator.

You will need to remove the platic tray between the header panel and the rad support to access the DRL module. It will be just to the right of the hood latch or on the driver's side of the hood latch. 1 8mm bolt holds it in place. Undo the bolt and then just poll on the S.O.B. until the connector lets go.

Get another one from a low milage late model at the wrecker.

This happened to me also when my wiper motor would not park properly. It took 15 sec or so after starting the car and the lights would go on. The wiper motor sends a signal to the LCM to turn the lights on when the motor is running. I would check the MFS first, that can be done with just a multimeter.
