i have to pull the cluster to replace my o/d off bulb anyways, i replaced all the bulbs in the spring, must not have got that one in all the way.

Removing the cluster is a BREEZE. Trust me ;\)
Follow the directions in the BOK forum under 92-05 cluster bulb replacement to get it out ;\)

I tried that mod on my '97 Grand Marquis, it doesn't have a 20 ohm resistor on the back of the cluster. I happened to have an extra cluster, so I started experimenting with it. On the back of the cluster, the oil gauge has 3 terminals "B" "G" and "S" If you put 12 volts on B, and ground both G and S, the needle on the gauge goes to the midpoint on the scale. If this were a real gauge, the needle should have pegged at the high end of the scale.

I went as far as taking the gauge apart, thinking that the resistor was built into the gauge, if it's in there, it's under the windings for the gauge.

My guess is that the newer clusters will have the same fake gauge as my '97 has, and if that's the case, the mod won't work.

Randy, not sure if you know this already, but the AutoMeter gauge in the Marauder is also a fake. You can buy a real working kit from AutoMeter, P/N 4327 that almost exactly matches the OEM gauge. Both the sender and the gauge itself must be replaced.

I picked up an oil pressure/temp gauge assembly (The part number on the box is F6MZ-10883-AA) from a Ford dealer who was selling his excess parts inventory on ebay.

I took it out to my test set-up that I was using to check for fake gauges, and this oil pressure gauge pegs high when I ground the "S" terminal. With a 20 ohm resistor, it's about at midpoint on the scale.

The next thing to do is install it in the car, change the sending unit, and see what happens.

what do those results indicate? that the gauge can be function but it not because of the resistor?

A real gauge should peg on the high side when you ground the "S" terminal, and when you put a 20 ohm resistor between that terminal and ground, it should point around mid-point on the scale.

This gauge does that, which means it should work as a real, functioning, oil pressure gauge when I put it, and the new sending unit into my car. (Hopefully!)

My '97 cluster is almost exactly the same as your '96, right down to the round pads the resistor is mounted to, except that there is a trace running between the pads.

I thought I'd update my progress so far on this thread.

The Motorcraft SW873B sending unit won't fit. There is a steel line running to the bottom of the power steering pump, and the sending unit hits it, and I can't get the threads to line up well enough to start them.

I found another sending unit, Motorcraft SW2433 and have ordered it. It is smaller than a SW873B, the only problem is that nobody stocks it, I should have it tomorrow.

wait... so on this pic where would you place the jumper? cuz this pic looks like mine but doesnt look anything like the pic on the install thread... (i think its the resistor on the far left, correct?)

Use the bottom plugged port and Get a 90 degree elbow in brass so the sending unit points back. Should fit then. Just leave the original in place or replace it with the plug removed from the bottom.

Well, I got the Motorcraft SW2433 sending unit this morning, and put it in. It replaces the stock sending unit perfectly, it looks as if it could have rolled off the assembly line that way.

It's harder to get, there are only two Ford models that use it, but well worth the wait.

One of them is a 1993 Mustang GT 5.0L 302CID w/gauge

My first mod, a fully functional oil pressure gauge!

I think he is using a 92-96 oil pressure GAUGE, inside his 97 cluster shell, with the new sending unit (and no jumpers used)

The 97+ clusters do not have the external 20ohm resistor, it is integral to the gauge. So, by using a -96 gauge inside his 97 cluster there is no resistor being used, which means it will read like a functional pressure gauge provided you use the correct sender.

Both of mine were '97 clusters, the only way to make this mod work with a '97 cluster, is to use a temp/oil guage assembly from a '96 cluster. The oil gauge in the '97 (and probably newer) can't be used for this mod.

The '96 and the '97 clusters are identical with the exceptions of the oil guage and the resistor. To remove the assembly, you have to remove the 4 gold screws at the top of the cluster, and the other 4 at the very bottom. This will allow you to remove the "glass" and the black plastic frame surrounding the gauges. This will expose the gauge assemblies. Just grab the temp/oil guage assembly, and gently pull, it will unplug from the cluster.

The '96 gauge assembly will plug right into the '97 cluster, and since there is no resistor, you don't have to jump anything. I changed the gauge assembly without removing the cluster from the car.

Once you have done that, the only thing that remains is to change the sending unit. I recommend the Motorcraft SW2433, harder to get, but easier to install. The Standard part number is PS243, GP Sorensen is OPS134.

After doing the mod, and driving around with it, I found that the "reaction time" for the gauge is a bit slow, but it's a heck of a lot better than the fake gauge I had.

i broke my foot and don't feel like hobbling around salvage yards checking VINs, it isn't a cold issue. besides my car is parked in someone else's garage for the winter.

Excellent information. Looks like I'll be pulling two '96 instrument clusters the next time I'm at the salvage yard.

TCCoA has an article on the oil pressure gauge, but does not mention anything about the 97+ gauges, might have never changed from the from the -96 style for the MN12/FN10s.

Just thought I'd update this, I've put about 3000 miles on since I did the mod, and it's working like a charm. The only real complaint is that the "response time" for the gauge is a bit slow, but other than that minor complaint, I'm happy!

Great information, I need to install this for my oil pressure gauge I just installed. The factory sending unit just pegs the gauge as it is the dummy sender, I will go ahead and order the Motorcraft SW2433. Then I will have a real oil pressure gauge on my A-Pillar.

(Motorcraft SW-1311)

BA

This from the 1996 passenger car parts book-part #'s subject to supercession.

Strike that first item. The correct engine unit is E9SZ-9278-A or Motorcraft SW-2220. The SW-1311 is for vehicles with the electronic cluster.

Hmm,

The an on-line search yelds two different 1996 "temp gauge" options.

1995 returns one.

Any thoughts on what one to order for my 2001?

i just installed '97 CVPI cluster in my '96,(had to swap out all the guages, long story...) and would like to do this mod, however my '96 cluster doesn't have a resistor like dRock's does (his circuit is yellow, both mine are red...), nor does it have one on the back of the gauge. does that matter? will it still work using my '96 gauge? i'm thinking there may have been a difference, as dRock's car is an LS, and mine's a GS....

what i can pick up is 22 may and it's either 1995 or 1996.....

here's what i can make out

ok. i think i'm just going to find another oil pres. gauge at the wreckers with those p/n's.....my only question is what kind of wiring is required to hook up that sending unit after i install it on the engine??

LX clusters also interchange so long as they are analog and not optional digital.

1992.5-1994 (1992 as well but incorrect shift patter is printed on speedo) cv for cv and gmq for gmq (different dashes)
1995-1997 cv/gmq
1998-2002 cv/gmq
2003-2005 cv/gmq


The speedo head itself (not entire cluster) will swap 95-02 and it appears 03-05 as well. CVPI use 140mph head

The Motorcraft SW-2220 is just a normally open pressure switch, whenever the oil pressure gets to a certain level, it closes. That is used with the "fake" gauge and the "real" gauge with the resistor.

If your original sending unit looks like a Motorcraft SW-2220, it has a threaded stud coming out of the top that the wire connects to, you shouldn't have to make any modifications to the wiring at all.

On the newer cars, Ford changed the sending unit connector, in that case, you have to either change the connector or build an adapter.
