How much mileage is lost going from 3.27 to 3.73? Does anyone have actual info on this subject? My driving is almost all highway getting to and from work and school. About 110 miles round trip give or take. Right now I get about 20-21mpg. Any specific info greatly appreciated. Feel free to add other info I should consider regarding 3.27-3.73 swap.

i have 4.10's and do mostly city driving. if i am cruzing at 50 mph my rpms in over drive is 2000 rpms. at 70mph my rpms are around 2700-2800 rpms. i am getting around 17-19mpg city and 12-14mpg highway. you should be good with 3.73 gears for the kinda driving you do. remember you can always run a taller tire on big gears.

If you get 3.73 gears won't you then need to get a new tune?
Anyone know what kind of time he would pick up in the quarter mile?

I went from 3.27's to 3.73's. My mileage went from 26/27 to 21/22 on the highway. Gas has at least 10% alcohol now and that is part of my loss.

I have a 3.55 traklok rear on my CVPI. I just took a road trip last Saturday. 250 miles round trip, with about 215 of that Interstate at mostly 70mph. I got 21.5 mpg. I use the cruise and keep it steady at the limit.

2.73 or 3.73? I think with your kind of driving, you are nuts to go in the 3.73 direction.

26/27 MPG with 3.27 gears? Sure you didn't have 2.73 or 3.08 gears?
I get 21 MPG at most with my 3.27 gears and I am usually cruising at 60 MPH and I use Shell gas(no alcohol). No cruise control in my car, but that can't account for 5 MPG difference.

I would not do it if you do that much highway driving, I have 3.73's and dread goin on highway trips. At 70 mph the car is at about 2400rpm, 80mph 2800-2900 rpm, doesn't sound that bad BUT it is over half of the engines RPM band.

I would not do it either...with the amount of driving you do it will cost you plenty. 3.27 have decent performance and mileage. I filled my car last night 428 miles on 18.1 gallons. Your not going to touch that with 3.73 gears.

I have thirsty 3.55s and the gas gauge drops like a rock in no time. 3.55s- Good in city, bad on highway. Unfortunately 98% of my driving is on the highway.

If you have a '98 CVPI you should have 3.55 gears.

2.73's are highway gears, cruising at speeds of 60-70mph you will be getting fairly optimal milleage. Some mebers have reported 26+ mpg highway.

Nope, 3.27. 3.55 was in '99, '00 and mid '01.

26+ should be very easy with 2.73s, considering i have no trouble getting 26+ with 3.27s at 65mph

I had an ex NYC taxi with 250K and 2.73's and got damn near 28 MPG driving it back home, all highway.

I always love talking to the owners of those little econoboxes getting 25 MPG, when I told them I got better gas mileage than they did... HAH!

I used to get 15-18 mpg combined with my 3.08 gears. I recorded a personal best of 22.9 mpg on a road trip last summer, and I wasn't going 55. \:D

Now with this cold weather and my 3.55s, I'm lucky if I get 13.5 mpg combined. \:\(

But still, that's what 2.73's will get ya ;\)

So 3.73 not a great idea for highway? A 5 mpg hit would be too much, especially when I have a tune for 91 octane. If I stay steady at 65-70mph I can get a good range of 340-350 miles. What if I added a fifth overdrive gear with a custom tranny or is that not possible and I don't know what I'm thinking?

My car is a daily driver, with 3.55s. I drive it 90mi a day; 90% highway. I can get around 310mi per tank, but I drive 70-75mph. Lately, the mileage has seemed to drop some; probably the weather. I have considered going to 3.27s, but I don't know if the difference would be enough to justify the cost.

My best has been 30 mpg between NE Ga and West Va,at an average speed of 65-70 mph. My average right now is about 26-27 mpg with winter blend fuel and average speed of 75.Thats with my current 2.73 RAR.
I also average 500 miles + a week.

Is there a lower gear set you could put in for that extra little boost in mileage? 2.73 sound pretty good, but say you wanted to easily get 30(or better?)

2.6 something gears?
2.5 something gears?
I dont know if there is a set of gears that can be put in lower then 2.73 with out going with a whole new custom rear end but the thought intrugues me.

Hows the performance with the 2.73 gears? I assume its good because otherwise it wouldnt have been an option.

So with a lower ration performance might be a tad worse but MPG would go up...how would city MPG be effected by the different gears?

Thoughts?

here are some ideas

2:73's will net you better highway mileage 27+ but worse city driving ~15MPG

3:27's are pretty much an good all round gear. I get 24-26MPG on the highway and am averaging 18MPG in straight city driving.

Now for each step up 3:55's, 3:73's you can expect a minimal increase for city driving and a 1-2MPG hit per gear for highway.

Does that make sence?

Yea my 3:55's are good for me. 98% city with a real short trip on the highway to work. I get around 16-17mpg, thats with a lot of spirited driving too. Spring break is coming up and we may be going down to Florida. These are awsome road trip cars, depending on your gears. Im worried about how she'll do mileage wise.

with 3:55's you should be in the low to mid 20's for MPG on the highway.

Around here gas is about $3 a gallon so lets use that. Right now you are getting around 20mpg on you 550 mile weekly commute. That would have you using 27.7 gallons costing $82.50. Now 20 mpg hywy is not great for a p71 with 3:27 so you might expect say 16mpg with 3:73. The same commute would take 34 gallons costing $103 adding over $80 to you monthly gas bill. If on the other hand you went to 2:73 you could expect 26mpg driving with a light foot and use 21 gallons for the week costing $63.5 and save your self about $80 a month from where you are now and a wopping $160 over what you would spend with 3:73s. If it costs $500 to change your gears it would take you six month and a week to break even going to 2:73. With the 3:73s you will have spent a extra $960 on gas + the $500 for the new gears.
If your going to be doing this type of driving for a couple of more years you could save some real money with 2:73s.

I'm glad someone else got on this topic and thanks for all the great info. I brought this up right after I bought my car..02' GM LSE package. I'm pretty sure that it's sporting the 3:55's but I didn't know that when I bought it. I just wanted a big car that got better gas mileage than I was getting with my suburban and I was hoping for around 25+ on the highway and 18 or so in town but after a couple of fills reality set in that I was averaging about 19 mpg with it (which is still better than 14). I am probably in the 21.5 range on the Highway but I have a heavy foot too. I'm pretty sure that it has the 3:55 gears in it (governor kicks in around 112). I don't have a current estimate on MPG because it has some serious street tires on it and with the snow in iowa right now it gets around horrible so I'm driving my truck. For those of you that have 3:27 are you really getting close to 25mpg? To me that sounds like a good ratio to change to for better economy and not a drastic drop in performance like I would notice with 2:73's. I probably do about 50/50 Hwy/City driving now but it'll be more like 85/15 in the fall when my little guy goes to school and i don't have to pick him up in the middle of town from the sitter. Plus, my plan was having this car so we could take it on vacations and the GF can use it for tennis tournaments out of town so she's not drivin' her hog of a truck too. How about those of you rollin' with the 3:08 gears...what are you getting?

Thanks,
Randy

You more than likely have 3:27s and the only was to get get good mileage in to ease off the gas. light= good mileage heavy foot= poor mileage. No way around it. Proper tire pressure is a big factor in mileage as well.

agree you should have 3:27's. I used to do a 110mi round trip commute for a year before I moved.

anyway... I am going to be taking a good trip on Sat that will be 100% Hwy. I will see what I get as I will be running around 75-80MPH.

I know though that with a heavy foot even on the highway I have dipped to around 19-20MPG. but with a light foot I am almost getting that in City. Last time I drove a good distance on the highway 80% Hwy/ 20% city I averaged around 24.6MPG.

Ric,

Don't get me wrong. I have a heavy foot but I have tried Babying through a couple of tanks too and it didn't really help. I thought that the cars with the LSE package came with the 3:55's. My milage seems more in line with what everyone is describing of the 3:55's than the 3:27's. If estimates are right from what has been described, is my rolling down the road with 3:27's going to put me in the 22mpg if I'm going 75 or 80? That's 2 - 3 mpg less than suggested mileage should be. I should have had my buddy run the scan tool on it for sure when he was still at Ford.

what is the axle code on your door sticker? I was only aware of 3:55's being put in TC or 99-00 CV/GM

Wow, I thought i had read somwhere 3:55 but your right...3:27...z5 code. I totally nursed a tank early on with 50/50 city/Hwy and my average was only in the 18.5 range. I went to my parents which is all country roads and I really wasn't over 65 much and I don't think it was any better than about 22 but spring and nice weather will be a better test I guess. I'll just have to watch it on a trip and go easy to get a real feel. If I could hit 24 or 25 on the hwy I'd be tickled. Thanks for the feedback.

There are a couple factors here. You are seeing a decrease in MPG right now because of winter blend gas. If you are still experienceing bad fuel economy here are a couple things I would recommend

Replace fuel filter
clean MAF
check/change air filter
clean TB
reset computer
Check spark plugs

X1 I can get decent mileage with my 3.27 with a light foot but if I get ignorant with the pedal it DROPS way down to 16-18MPG.

In my Mustang I get 25mpg on the highway with 3.73's and a 5 speed. My average with mixed driving is 21mpg. I'm not seeing this with a Vic bud.

4.11:1 is a 9-inch ratio. you may mean 4.10:1, i would believe you if you have an early aero, although i don't know your model/year

Well, last night I swapped in the 2.73's and changed the speedo gear.

I know this is unscientific BUT....

On the way up, with 3.27's, 65 MPH all the way, I put EXACTLY 5 gallons in, just as my low fuel light came on, before I got on the highway, and made it to 98 miles before the low fuel light came on again, I drove around for another 5 miles after that to reach my destination.

On the way BACK, I filled up EXACTLY 4 gallons, I was stuck behind a rolling roadblock @ 20MPH for about 5 miles, then hit 65MPH the rest of the way down, and my low fuel light came on @94 miles...

3.27, 5 gallons @ 98 miles= 19.6 MPG

2.73, 4 gallons @ 94 miles= 23.5 MPG

completely unscientific, and LOTS of room for error, but you can definitely see the difference...

There is a HUGE difference between 2.73's and 3.27's, I IMMEDIATELY noticed that off the line performance was damn near pitiful, but @ highway speeds, the engine wasn't working nearly as hard maintaining speed, and on steep grades it wasnt 'engine braking' like it normally would.. With 3.27's on steep grades I could put it in N and GAIN speed, while if in D it would keep speed/slow down. With the 2.73's, there's much less resistance because of such low gearing, and was about the same as if in N on the same steep grade, gaining speed.

WARNING TO THOSE WITH 2.73's! It's MUCH easier to speed with lower gears. I normally can maintain 60-65 without even looking at my speedo. Because of the completely different feel of the lower gearing, I found myself inching up to 70-75 without even noticing. Backing off the gas with 3.27's netted an almost instant decel, backing off the gas with 2.73's netted me almost nothing.. heh..

Again, completely unscientific, but numbers nonetheless..

Haha yeah, mine runs weird sometimes but still gets great mileage. Do you get 22-23 in mixed driving or strictly highway? Thats great either way, especially with an SN95.

I have a question, where is this tag I read to find out the rear end gears in my 2003 P71. I'm curious now lol.

That's strictly highway. In town, I don't even want to know what my mileage is,.... I have a hard time staying out of the loud pedal...

There is a sticker in the driver's door jamb, showing the axle code, or, there should be a metal tab on one of the diff cover bolts.

I have 2.73's and its very responsive in the 60mph and up range. However, this gearing makes it feel poderous and "boaty" at lower speeds driving around town. And I'm still getting a miserable 16.5 mpg 70/30 city/highway mix. Winter fuel and cold weather is partly to blame, though.

If I'm not mistaken because of the sticker being faded, it reads the axle code as X5. Sound right?
