Hey all, after my oil change I noticed a slight ticking. Sounds like lifters. I used some Lucas treatment and 10W 40 weight oil. It's not real loud and some people can't even hear it. My question is this. Is it normal? Or, what should I do? Would hate to redo an oil change...lol

Also, if it is the lifters, I hear roller rockers are good. How bad of an install?

What do you drive? Box's lifters are easily adjustable but I don't know about the modulars'. I'm sure they are somehow, maybe you shim them or something.

Its injector tick, and i think you should be running 5W-20, unless the 2v is different than the 4v in oil requirement wise.

You have a somewhat common complaint. I ignore the tick. It's been doin it off and on for 6 years now so.. More so right after an oil change too.- Not sure why?

What year panther do you have?

Thanks guys. I will definitely put the info in. Man, I need a pic!! OK, about the 2v and 4v, not sure what you mean by that. Now, in the winter, you want thinner weight oil right? Do you all let your car warm up before you go. I have been. When I had a TT ZX, I always did. Also, you guys are awesome in responding. Thanks.

I see...a 99. Cool. I do let it warm up due to somewhat high idling. Maybe 2 min is all. The rear end will clunk if I put it in reverse without letting it idle some. Might be normal. Might be the rear u-joint ? IDK. Keeps going and snd going though. Just have to baby ir a little sometimes like the cold startup. The mechanics and tire/oil/lube guys just jump in and put it in gear before the idle comes dowm..period. Can't possibly make them understand the quirks of a Vic so..forgetaboutit. \:\)

Put a new Motorcraft filter in. Some filters have inferior anti-drainback valves. Even the Motorcraft units can be defective as well.

You should be using 5w-30. You can use 10w-30 if it doesn't touch freezing, but seeing as you are in WV use 5w-30.




The injectors tick normally, but it should not be audible with the hood closed.
If the sound is almost like a sewing machine and matches engine rpm your timing chain guides may be shot. The debris can actually clog the oil pickup, dropping oil pressure and killing the engine.
Try to pinpoint the noise better.

DUMP THE OIL!!!!!!!!!

10w-40 is a total waste of 0.5 MPG and a waste period. On top of lucas, im sure you have a 20w-50 mixture now. There is nothing gained by using it in a modern engine. If you have winter in your area, dump it and go with 5w-20 or 5w-30, whichever will make you sleep better. Don;t get caught up in the 20 vs 30 debate as ford has approved both for your engine. Use what you want to.

Also you need to run a motorcraft FL-820s or a Wix 51372. Other filters have crappy rubber ADV that will cause a tick on startup.

The 4.6's are noisy on startup, all mine are slightly more audiable when cold and every one I have ever owned made some kind of noise. If is not very noticable but I can tell.

Mine ticks...always has, ever since I got it. Everyone keeps asking if it's lifter tick and if I should have it checked. I tell them it's my injectors, and that their Hondas do it too. They would just need to put an actual muffler on the exhaust to hear it first. All OHC engines, the 4.6 included, are noisy engines on startup. Once the revs come down, it's fine.

The 10-40w you used was too heavy of an oil and on top of that you used lucas oil treatment. People claim that it is a miracle product but all it does is thicken up your oil to hide engine noises. So on top of using 10-40w it has been thickened by the lucas so it is probably more like 20-50w like fordiesel69 says and being in WV you really need the reccomended 5-20w, so i would change the oil agian and use the reccomended weight of oil and go from there on pinpointing your ticking noise. For some reason ford seems to vary between 5-20w and 5-30w for reccomended oil weight, on my 2001 mustang gt it calls for 5-20w and my 2000 crown vic calls for 5-30w. But i checked and your car calls for 5-20w.

5-20w! Damn, OK. I bought one of those Haynes manuals and it calls for 10w-30 between 0 degrees F and 100+ F. For cold weather below 0 degrees F, it says 5w-30.

This is what confuses me. All these damn choices...lol

See if this makes it more clear:

What your manual told you was correct for the year your car was made. Since then (2001, IIRC) Ford issued a TSB allowing the use of 5W-20 in many earlier motors, including yours. So the short answer is you can use 10W-30, 5W-30, or 5W-20 without worry. In your climate, 5W-30 and 5W-20 would be the recommended choices. I also agree with the posters comments ^^^ about using a Motorcraft, WIX or NAPA Gold filter.

As far as your 2V-4V question, it means 2-valve or 4-valve (per cylinder)...you have a 2-valve. The 2V is also commonly referred to as a SOHC (Single OverHead Cam) while the 4V is called a DOHC (Double OverHead Cam).

Your engine doesn't have lifters, it has hydraulic lash adjusters and roller cam followers (which look a lot like a roller rocker). Here is a picture. The factory setup is very durable and should last a long time with proper maintenance.

If you had just put in 10w-40 all by itself, I would say wait till next oil change. However being you used lucas with it, your oil is way to thick for saftey. The wear on startup is going to be considerable. Dump it now for a lighter weight.

Running too thick of oil will allow your oil filter to run in bypass mode very frequently. This, depending on the design of the filter, can case a lot of the particulate trapped in the filter to go directly into your oil passages. If it is a cheapo filter, the material itself can collapse and then you will not even have a filter anymore. You will have a mini tin can acting as a surge tank.

I vote for dumping it out now before the weather gets cold. Your starter, batteries, fuel economy, and engine will all thank you.

I noticed what I thought was injector ticking with my hood closed once and it turned out to be one of my spark plugs was a little loose...not cool! I could actually feel a heavier pulsation on the top of the coil then the rest...maybe worth a quick feel. \:\)

I started hearing that after I changed oil. Was using Mobil 1 5w20 and no noise, then switched to Royal Purple 5w30 and hearing tick on cold startup. Not sure if that's it or cuz of colder weather, but I'm switching back to see how she does.

Well, the thing is, when I started the car up at the auction place, there was no tick. Only after the oil change did it do that.

Like I said before, I just let the car warm up. I just hate to think of the damage it's doing while ticking.

Lastly, this may be a stupid question. Keeping the p71 a p71 on replacement parts, is there specific parts you need to buy? I don't want to replace stuff on the car that is less then Police Interceptor quality.

Also, I have the Flowmasters on, what is the next upgrade I should do? This is related to performance or just anything I should know. i.e. Spark plugs, wires etc.

I'd recommend 0w-20 Amsoil and a motorcraft filter. 10-40 oil is too thick. Our cars have overhead cams, the oil must be thin enough to slpash easliy on the cams. 10-40 when cold is way too thick. You are grinding cams everytime you start it.

Ticking can also be your timing chains eating into the tensioners.

My towncar would do that every once and a while. Then it started doing it non-stop. It's my excuse to put in a PI engine now. Still runs fine. Well, it did when I parked it anyhoo.

Well, the ticking is starting to get to me. I can sort of hear it when I'm driving and of course I'm listening for it. Also, in park, I rev it up and can hear it. I just wish I knew what it was then I would try and take care of it.

So, I have the 5w-30 oil in it. Should I add something to make it thicker? I did use the oil filter that was recommended. Motorcraft one.

Lastly, should I be concerned about this? What's the worse that can happen??

Did you take it in to the dealership? Maybe you can get a mechanic to just drive it for a few minutes. I fel its hard to diagnose without listening where the ticking is coming from.

Shallot,

That was definitely the next step. I need to check out a rubbing noise in my right front wheel well anyway. Probably going to take it to Ford. Just don't want to get charged up the ( ! ) for them looking. (Not my ass, but the car.) But, at least I will know right?

I am running 5w-20 like recommended by my oil cap without any issues...at least that I know of.

You sure it's a lifter ticking and not an exhaust leak ? My passenger side exhaust manifold has a broken rear stud that I haven't got around to replacing yet and it has a ticking sound very similar to a lifter tick. You can hear it more under power and when engine is reving then you can when it's just idleing. Sometimes the ticking will go away as the motor heats up and the exhaust manifold expands and seals the leak a little more.

BTW............. 5W - 30 conventional is fine but synthetic is best.

If its only on accelerating it might be a ping. Try pulling the octane adjust jumper in the engine compartment and see if it changes. Could be a plugged EGR. My Two Cents

OK, well, I listened very close today down at Advance and here is what I got. The guy listened to it and said it was no big deal and that he could barley here anything.

Second, I checked the oil and I said,"Hows it look.?" They said it looked like I just changed my oil. (150 miles ago.) I said I changed due to the thicker weight. She said I should use thicker oil in higher mileage cars. (154,xxx) I said, well, I have been researching it (CV.Net)and I was told to use what you all said. 5w-30 (I did use Valvoline Max Life for engines over 75,XXX miles.) <-- Is that OK?

Now, back to the ticking. Again, it sounds not at the top of the engine like where the lifters are, but more mid to bottom engine.

It almost sounds like a "tock" instead of a "tick" When the car first starts, it's ticking up around the top of the engine,(I don't drive until that goes away. 2 mins. or so.) but the "tock" sounds like it's at the bottom. You could almost say it has a slight rattle sound without the rattle. ...Damn, I'm confusing myself.

I'm sorry for beating this thread to death but hopefully it has been useful to everyone here.

That rattle sound or whatever it really is...yep-I know that sound.mine does it somewaht at startupwhen cold. Might be tensioners/timing chain. I'll worry about it in a few years when I approach 200 thousand on the odometer. Car is tough.

The sound will be most evident in a carport or garage due to the sound bouncing off the walls. Can't really hear it out in the open. It's probably ok. Could very well be a slight exhaust leak. Keep it in mind. Expansion and contraction-just like said above^^ Maybe.

The 5W - 30 at Walmart your talking about is a Blend. It will work fine but I personally like the fully synthetic. The fully Synthetic will give you about as much protection as you can get, especially on cold start up where most of the wear and tear on your engine takes place. The other option is to use conventional oil with a Lucas Oil additive or the like but by the time you buy the oil and additive, it cost about the same as Synthetic.

Thanks all. I took it to the exhaust shop where I got the Flowmasters on and he did weld a small part of a heat shield back but it wasn't it.

Guys, today it was sort of louder. Could it be a piston?

I can really hear it when I'm sitting in the car and rev it up. That's where it is the loudest. Then, when I open the hood and use the engine throttle, it's not as noticeable.

This may be part of the problem as well. Sometimes when I sit in the car at idle, the car vibrates for a split second, goes away and them comes back. Like a cycle. It does it within 2 seconds. Could one of my spark plugs be out or something? Maybe need new ones?

I think I may just take it to Ford and get it tuned up. Maybe they can tell me what it is.

I really do appreciate all the feed back guys.

5-30 oil is fine.. the argument about synthetic and conventional oils goes on endlessly on here .. its make me laugh constantly

just use a decent motorcraft or wix filter.... pure one is fine... change your oil at 3K or so with conventional and 5-7K on syn and you should be fine....

it is hard to imagine your sound... but if it is more noticeable in the car when you rev it that would sound like an exhaust leak... you said they put flowmasters on... i would say they need to check again..

did you hear this noise before they did that or after?

always start with the obvious first

heavy weight oils in high mileage motors is OLD SCHOOL... auto zone, advance, pep boys the whole retail chain will employ anyone so just ignore them unless you know the guy... overhead cam motors in general have major issues with heavy oils.. but speaking for the mod motor crowd its totally bogus in your climate... no reason to do it....

your car doesnt burn much oil i bet... these motos last a long time ...

I heard the sound before the exhaust work. So, I don't think that's it. It sounds like it's mid motor to bottom. Car doesn't burn anything. Good sign.

I just need to take it in. I'm beating this thread to death!!
