I changed my rear wheel bearings, which was only a small PITA. As I was putting everything back together, though, I found that the little spider gears had both fallen out. I had done all of the work without installing the big pin back into the carrier to hold them in place. I thought that it wouldn't be a problem since it's a Traction-Lok. Wrong!
I searched here, Googled, and then spent a couple hours trying to get them to mesh back in, without success. I may have to admit defeat and have it brought to a shop on a flatbed. I've never had to do that.....grrr. I'll keep you posted, maybe with a picture of a Crown Vic at the bottom of a cliff.

Aww that stinks.

It's easy enough to get em back in with an open rear. Does take some patience though. The do only fit in ONE way, so trial and error is in order.

The Trac loc should not interfere TOO much.

They won't charge you too much, sometimes things just get too frustrating to do youself

You ROLL them into place but you'll need the "S" spring out to do it. With the spring out, there is very little friction on the side gears and you can move stuff around easily, almost as easily as if it were an open diff.

I could make a video on putting them back into an open carrier assembly. It would be similar with exception to installing your s-spring, which is easy to see how it goes it, but requires some hammering and some persuation.

+1 with John.

As long as the s-spring is out they spin right into place. Spin the carrier using the pinion/flange for better access. One side gear will stay still and the other will spin as they rotate into place. You need to do both at the same time and on opposite sides of carrier.
Have the axles pulled out so you aren't trying to spin them with the side gears.

Had to have it brought to the shop I use. They broke the "S" spring and had to order a new one. Done in a couple days, supposedly. This car has bad mojo!
